Weinstein to dicuss Hiss case
Allen Weinstein, professor
of history at Smith College
and author of the widely
discussed Perjury: The
Hiss-Chambers Case
(Knopf, 1978) will deliver the
first annual Harold E. and
Margaret Rorschach Memo-
rial Lecture in Legal History
at 8 p.m. Thursday, April 20, in
the Chemistry Lecture Hall.
He will discuss lessons of the
Hiss-Chambers case.
The new series of lectures in
legal history was endowed by
Harold E. Rorschach of Rice's
physics faculty in honor of his
parents who died last year.
The senior Rorschach was a
prominent Tulsa, Okla. lawyer
with a keen interest in legal
history.
Weinstein's book is the first
scholarly work on the Hiss-
Whittaker Chambers case to
use previously classified FBI
and other government files.
He was also given unrestricted
access to the Hiss legal
defense files.
Weinstein received his
doctorate from Yale Univer-
sity. In addition to his
professorship at Smith, he is
director of the 20th Century
Fund's project on Access and
Privacy—the first significant
effort to study the impact of
the Freedom of Information
and Privacy Acts upon U.S.
intelligence agencies.

of the Natipnal Science
Foundation Board, Hack-
erman has made two trips to
the South Pole in January '75
and last December. He is
expected to show slides from
both journeys.
During his '75 tour,
Hackerman helped dedicate a
new South Pole research
station built by the NSF and
the Navy. In his most recent
trip, he observed many
projects at the McMurdo
Station, including the study of
lifeforms found underneath
the icecap and fossils found
above it. These fossils were
found to match fossils in
Africa, giving support to the
plate tectonics theory which
contends that at one time
Africa, Asia and Australia
were connected to Antarctica
Last summer the NSF
honored Hackerman for his
interest in Antarctic research
when they named a mountain
on the continent Hackerman
Ridge.
