The Gym-A Million Dollar Deal
Major renovations to the
gymnasium are expected to
expand both the P.E. and
varsity programs. The 1.4
million dollar improvement
project has already begun and
the plan should be completed
' y next year. The biggest part
to the expanding PE program,
the addition of two new wings
>a either side of the swimming
pool, will not be completed
until January, said Russ
Pittman. However, interior
remodeling should be ready by
the time school starts. That
includes a single central
equipment issue room in the
old ping-pong room and new
ceramic tile floors and lockers
for both maie and female
dressing rooms. Whereas the
women's locker irea will not
be issued as main additional
lockers as the mens', 144 new
lockers, there will be vanity
set-ups for the women.
Each half of the twin wings

Publishing Program
The first Rice University
Publishing Program, con-
ducted June 5-30, was a
tremendous success; the
course was, in itself, a unique
experience, and the practical
knowledge gained through the
program is expected to have a
very real value in today's
competitive job market.
William Broyles and
Michael, directors of the
program's magazine publish-
ing section, and Daniel Okrent
and Eugene Stone, book
section directors, coordinated
a schedule which included
more than seventy speakers
and a unique method of
teaching through simulation
of actual situations. Among
the speakers present in the
four-week program were
George Green, president of
The New Yorker, Clay Felker,
editor-in-chief of Esquire,
Ashbel Green, vice-president
of Knopf Inc., and a wide
assortment of other publish-
ing professionals.
The Rice faculty was
represented by Dr. Max Apple,
who presented the author's
view of the publishing process,
as well as Dr. William Martin
and Geoffrey Winningham,
who related their experiences
in working as free-lance writer
and photographer for various
publications.
The idea for the program
was first conceived bv William
Broyles, editor of Texas
Monthly, and Dr. Linda
Driskill, director of the Office
of Continuing Studies, as a
course in editing. In August of
1977, however, Susan Barry, a
representative of the publish-
ing company of Harcourt,
Brace, and Jovanovich and a
former student of the Sarah
Lawrence publishing course,
decided that Rice was the
ideal location for a similar
program. When, shortly
thereafter, Harcourt's
education department closed,
Dr. Driskill decided to make
the program her office's major
project for the summer of 1978.
Daniel Okrent, former editor
in-chief at Harcourt, and
Eugene Stone, presently editor
there, were chosen as directors
of the book section, while
William Broyles and Texas
Monthly publisher Michael
Levy became magazine
section directors.
In October, Okrent visited
Houston to meet with Broyles
and make advance plans.
Susan Barry remained at Rice,
handling publicity here and at
other institutions. Dr. Driskill.
and her staff sent out advance
assignments, arranged for on
campus housing for students
arriving from outside Houston
(including some coming from
as far away as Wisconsin and
New York), and handled the
many administrative details.
