EDITORIALS
I was the- night bet ore school starts
And all throughout Rice
Every creature was stirring
For a last carefree night
No books and no papers
No tests you must take
No nagging reminders
Of the four you just made
The Library is dark
A beautiful sight
No wieners are seen
Studying tonight
Strange sounds can be heard
Floating round the Quad
Laughter and dancing
Oh, it's so odd!
Midnight bells toll
And they ring for thee
Your time is now short
For feeling so free
Eight o'clocks start tomorrow
You get your first syllabus
You know that already
Your semester is hopeless
You go to your college
Seeking comfort and rest
All you see is the stew
And you become more depressed
You head for your room
A last futile escape
But the door has been locked
By your frustrated roommate
Social Attitudes: Can
They Change?
The whole is greater than the
sum of its parts.
In this case "the whole" is
Rice University which is
composed not only of many
disciplines of knowledge, but
also eight colleges. Eight
individual colleges, as some
would have it. By individual I
mean set apart from the whole,
from the rest of the university.
It is becoming increasingly
obvious that many members of
the women's colleges consider
themselves a cut above their
sisters in the coed colleges.
Admittedly this attitude has
been fostered by the coed
women who sometimes refer to
the women of Jones and Brown
as "those sorority girls," but
even so, there is no excuse for
maintaining this type of
attitude.
The Rice Thresher, August 31, 1978, page 2
There is a reason why
fraternities and sororities are
not allowed at Rice. It is their
very exclusive, cliquish nature
that is anathema to the spirit of
academic equality and human
respect at Rice.
Can it be that Rice is
changing faster than its
members? That while Rice is
striving to achieve and enhance
social normality and coopera-
tion between men and women,
some people are dragging their
feet?
Supposedly we are all here to
get the best possible education.
There is nno requirement that
says every woman must make it
into the Junior League and
there is no Cum Laude award
for the best dressed at Rice.

There is reason to believe
that soon the majority of
colleges will be coed, leaving
perhaps Brown as the only
women's college. Of course
there is a need and a use for
single sex colleges, but that
ultimate decision is up to the
University.
Whatever college is chosen
to remain all female, it will be a
college set apart only in
function by the university.
Certainly its members will not
be a chosen people set apart by
God.
The idea that any one group
of students is superior to
another at Rice has always
been against the University's
intentions and spirit. This
petty, haughty attitude must
cease. We are all sisters and
brothers in pursuit of truth and
knowledge. Together we create
the greatness of the whole.
