Owls lose one, win one
Russell Henderson
Rice played its best
basketball in almost a month
Saturday night, but still came
up short, falling to Houston 75-
72.
The visiting Owls could have
won this one, though. With
1:10 remaining, Glenn Rieke
dunked in a rebound to narrow
Houston's lead to 73-70.
Houston's Byron Gibson was
touled by Bobby Tudor and
:nissed the front end of the one-
and-one. The Owls came down,
and Gibson goaltended on a
Glenn Rieke jumper, closing
the Owls within 73-72.
Willis Wilson fouied the
Cougars' Greg Smith with 29
seconds remaining. Smith
missed the first shot, giving the
Owls the ball and a chance to
win. But Bobby Tudor, who
shot well all evening, missed on
a jumper, and the Cougars' Ken
Ciolli came down with the
rebound. Greg Smith was
fouled and hit on both freebies
for the win.
Rice came out ready to play
from the beginning, as they
streaked to a quick 6-0 lead.
But H ouston came back to take

a 10-8 lead with 15:32
remaining in the half. The
Cougars never relinquished
that lead.
At times, Houston looked
like it was going to blow the
game open, as they took a 10-
point lead at 30-20. But the
Owls stayed tough and closed
the deficit to 41-35 at the half.
The second half was like the
first in that the Cougars
threatened to blow the game
open. With 11:26 left in the
game, Houston assumed its
largest lead, 59-47. But Brian
Burns, Elbert Darden and
Glenn Rieke began to connect,
keeping the Owls close enough
to make that final run.
After the game. Coach
Schuler pointed out that
"there's no such thing as a
moral victory. We lost the
game and we're disappointed
about that. But I'm extremely
proud of our kids. We got
outstanding play from each
and every one."
Elbert Darden and Brian
Burns shared scoring honors
with 18 points apiece. Bobby
Tudor had a solid game, adding
17 points and 7 assists.
Defensively, Anthony DeCello
played tough defense on
Houston's Ken Williams, who
managed but 6 of his 16 points
while DeCello was guarding
him.
Rice vs. TCU
Rice did not play its best
game of the year Monday
night, but still managed to ease
past TCU 84-80.
In the first half, the owls had
a chance to blow the Frogs out,
while in the second half, it
looked as if we wanted to give
the game away.

In the early going, it ws all
Elbert Darden, as the 6-3 senior
scored 10 of Rice's first 14
points, helping the Owls to a
14-8 lead with 15:11 remaining
in the half. Rice spread its lead
in the next few minutes with
timely baskets from "Ants"
DeCello and Joe Daniels. With
10 minutes left in the first
period, the Owls led by 28-17.
But TCU came back, hitting
from outside after the Owls
switched to a zone defense.
Mark Nickens and Terry Tibbs
came off the bench to spark the
Frogs to 9 unanswered points,
cutting the Owl lead to 28-26.
The two teams traded
baskets for the remainder of the
half, and Rice went into the
dressing room leading bv just
39-36.
At the beginning of the
second half, Rice jumped to a
49-42 lead and it looked as if
the Owls were finally going to
take control. The Frogs,
though, kept hitting over a
sluggish Rice defense, and
finally knotted the game at 58
with 8:56 left in the game.
After Darden connected on a
three-point play to make it 61-
58, TCU's Steve Scales and Ed
Wineinger each scored to give
TCU its first lead since the
opening minute of the game.
The lead see-sawed until the
Frogs took a 70-67 advantage
with 4:48 remaining.
But, a Brett Burkholder
layup was followed by a couple
of TCU turnovers, enabling
Rice to streak to a 75-70 lead.
From that point on, Rice
scored almost exclusively on
free throws, including four
clutch freebies by DeCello in
the final 1:17.
In the final minutes, Coach
Schuler returned to an
offensive-defensive strategy,
utilizing Daniels, Brian Burns,
and Bobby Tudor on the
offense, and DeCello, John
Mott, and Willis Wilson on
defense. The strategy was
successful, for DeCello forced a
crucial TCU turnover in the
final minute.

Offensively, Elbert Darden
tied his career high of 31 points.
Joe Daniels came off the bench
to hit on 5 of 5 from the field
and 5 of 5 from the line for 15
points. DeCello, who has been
playing superb defense in the
last two weeks, also added 10
points.
