GSA
A committee to study the
possibility of requiring 9 minimum
English proficiency level for
incoming graduate students was
formed at the last GSA meeting.
The GSA needs feedback from the
graduate student body on this
subject. Let you rep know if you
have an opinion. B. Iyer will chair
the committee.
The GSA also voted to
recommend that Rice University
Residency requirements be
changed from the amount of Rice
fees paid to number of semester
hours taken at Rice.
The annual GSA Fall picnic will
be Saturday, Oct. 13 near the
intramural field. Funds from
Advanced Studies and Research
that normally subsidize this event
will be given to the Graduate
Wives Loan Fund instead. More
details concerning the picnic will
be announced next week.
Upcoming events include:
♦GSA Fall picnic, Sat. Oct. 13
•GSA October meeting,
Thursday, Oct. 18, 7:00 pm
•Halloween Party at Valhalla,
Oct. 31
♦TGIF, as usual, Friday at

The new Section 1 Rep is Bill
Keller (up-and-coming politico?).
While on the subject, maybe we
should list your Reps. The other
Section 1 Rep is Betty Jo
Matthews. Section 2: Barry Seibel
and Alan Jarniga. Section 3: John
Walker and Teresa McHenry.
Section 4: Kurt Eggert, Glen
Pickett. Off-campus: Nancy
Bennett, Sony a Carter, and Joel
Lilly.
Sign up for the Hanszen
Escorting List, which will be given
to each Hanszen girl so she'll
always have a list of willing
volunteers to escort.
The Third Annual Tower Party
is in the works. The date is still
uncertain due to conflicts.
Comments and/or gripes (but
who would gripe?) about food
should be made to Food Rep
Leslie Askoras.
Start getting ready for
Bike Team. We're going all out this
year. We still need a men's team
captain.
If you have old tests from past
years, please donate to the
Hanszen Test File in Room 171.

THE MEN WHO BROKE THE
Yellowstone, the bourbon
r&S&S^i
In 1841, the Oregon Trail wasn t
much but a set of lonely wheel
ruts heading west out of
Independence, Missouri.
Over the years, it grew
into a glorious legend.
But the men who broke it open were
real, carrying with them only goods
of practical value: flour, salt,
bucksaws and plows, iron skillets,
feather beds and barrels of the
smoothest sipping whiskey they
could find.
They found that whiskey back.

Keys...
continued from page 1
In conclusion, Pitman notes that
key security is not a new problem
at Rice. He characterizes key
security as "a very difficult
problem that comes up
periodically," continues Pitman.
"It usually comes up when you
have a rash of thievery and every
body gets all excited about keys.
We've wrestled with the problem
for many years and have never
come up with a satisfactory
solution."
