SHADOWS

Bowie and Mitchell release LP's...
Joni Mitchell comes of age in the
lyrical jazz of Shadows and Lighf.
continued from section 2. page 5
Two Charley Mingus/Joni
Mitchell collaborations, "The Dry
Cleaner from Des Moines" and
"Goodbye Pork Pie Hat", stand
out as the purest jazz numbers.
With backing vocals by The
Persuasions, Joni provides the
album's treat on "Why Do Fools
Fall in Love", an ancient rock
classic. The Persuasions also bring
excellent breadth of harmony to
"Shadows and Light," an exquisite
ballad.
"God Must Be a Boogie Man"
humorously leads into the final
cut, "Woodstock." Mitchell's
current performance of "Wood-
stock" exemplifies the overall
changes in her music. Eerie notes
have invaded the melody, giving
the song a texture of cynical
expressionism. Joni Mitchell has
matured as a performer, now
recognizing paradise as probably
unattainable, but still worthy of
lyrical dreaming.

Scary Monsters
David Bowie
RCA Records
David Bowie's latest release,
Scary Monsters, presents the
multi-faceted art rocker at his
metallic best. Bowie assembled
hordes of musical talent for this
impressively performed and
produced album. Reflecting the
mood of the times, Bowie's current
music has become hauntingly
serious. Themes of world

the tradition of
the world's great problem solvers.
Developing the ana-
lytical theory known by his
name, Joseph Fourier gave
the world a basic tool for
engineering analysis and
system design.
Today, E-Systems
engineers are carrying on
his tradition. They're using
Fourier's mathematical
accomplishments to solve
some of the world's tough-
est electronics problems
via computer-designed
circuitry.
E-Systems designs

Bowie's latest features a horde of
musical talent.
confusion, social idiocy and
general insanity pervade the lyrics.
Two strikingly unique versions of
"It's No Game" open and close the
LP, warning of harsh conse-
quences yet to come. Shrieking
vocals and sinister guitar
accentuate the first (which includes
a frantic Japanese chorus), while
the latter's stark melody pierces
with calmness. "Fashion" indicts
social trends for turning humanity
into a goon squad. And the title
track, "Scary Monsters," explores
social relations that turn horribly
destructive
On "Ashes to Ashes," the
adventures of Major Tom
continue with Bowie's space-
travelling hero beset by astral drug
problems. Pete Townshend steps
in on guitar for "Because You're
Young," which speculates on
adolescent life in the apocalypse
torn future.
Scary Monsters contains a
myriad of fine progressive music in
which Bowie's vocals, keyboard
work and songwriting are all no
less than brilliant. ~ His use of
outside talent, most noticeably
Robert Fripp, also deserves praise.
In a period when a lot of musicians
seem concerned only with merely
shocking their audience,, David
Bowie's consistently fresh
creativity is certianly appealing.
