I he shoppes still had cobwebs in
the windows, and the smell of
sawdust had not been superseded
by that of crowds and food.
Last weekend 1 went up to the
grounds of the Texas Renaissance
Festival, to have a chance to see
them before it opens this Saturday
to six weekends of crowds and
gaiety. The Festival has expanded
greatly ths year: Robin Hood's
Sherwood Forest has appeared, in
addition to dozens of new stalls,
with hanging plants that spring
from every crevice. Arid there still
are all the old buildings—Eliza-
bethan cottages (each with its own
private garden, as if the sixteenth-
century owner had just stepped out
for a minute, but was certainly
coming back), the Japanese
Village, the gypsy camp...
Because the Festival hadn't
opened to the public yet, the
players who were wandering
around hadn't fully donned their
magic guises. The knights

"choreography", and the
Renaissance shopkeepers were
fixing up their stalls with
electric tools and drinking
Lone Star beer (one of the
sponsors of the
Festival). But
this magic, only
half-assumed
by the players,
was strongly
felt in the
atmosphere.
Maybe it was just the quiet of a
peaceful autumn day away from
the city and the traffic and the
smog, but if you walk around the
grounds for a while, you begin to
feel like you're being pulled back
past centuries and customs. That's
what the Festival claims to do—to
make you forget about the
problems and busyness of the
twentieth century. Under the
influence of good food, beautiful
scenary, and fine crafts, it
succeeds.
Tickets for any day of the
Festival are $8.95, which sounds
like a lot, but I think it's worth it.
The Texas Renaissance Festival is
a piece out of a dream,
awaiting only the cooler
winds of each fall to be
reborn.
Whether or
not you are
the kind of
person who
believes in
dreams,
when you
walk through the gate of the
Festival, it will be with a dream in
your heart.

flawless technique in their
execution, handling castinets with
finesse and astounding articula-
tion. Greco danced with a bravura
and assurance that captured the
audience. Lorca exhibited a
professional blandness about her,
and her dancing never approached
becoming impassioned until the
last of her numbers.
The corps was responsible for
the Mexican dance portion.
Although the dances were lively,
the limited vocabulary of
movement became obvious
shortly. Luckily, with each piece
the eyes could marvel at an
extra ordi nary collection of
elaborate costumes and a band on
stage that added atmosphere and
enlivened several pieces.
Unfortunately this veneer failed to
disguise the fact that these ethnic
dances are meant to be
participated in (or at least viewed
at close proximity) and not to be
seen on stage. They lose their
potency from the audience's
perspective.
The high point of the evening
was a dramatic "Deer Dance"
performed by artistic director,
choreographer, and principal
dancer Jorge Tyller. He exuded
intense energy and depicted the
stalked deer with an acute
awareness in his movement.
