B ay I o rite seeks satan
in backward rock tunes
Not many rock experts spend
the majority of their time listening
to their albums backwards, but
Baylor University student Barry
Sanderlin does.
Reminiscent of the sixties, and
the public's curiosity to the
Beatles, Sanderlin contends that
backward masking was first used
in reference to Paul McCartney
death rumors. He believes the
Beatles used backward masking to
arouse public interest.
Sanderlin says rock musicians
implant messages in songs which
only the subconscious mind can
pick up when listeneng to a song
played forward in the conventional
mode.
According to Sanderlin, phrases
and sentences refer principally to
Satan when played backwards.
The Eagles, Beatles, Led Zeppelin,
Pink Floyd, and the Electric Light
Orchestra all use this intriguing
backward masking technique.
"It's a very limited practice,"
said Sanderlin. "But once you get
your ear trained for it, you can
hear them (the references) pretty
good."
In the Eagles' Peaceful Easy
Feeling the phrase "Satan is the
reason we sing" represents the
backward version of the phrase
"and I want to sleep with you in the
desert tonight." Led Zeppelin's
Stairway to Heaven contains the
phrases "I will sing because I live
with Satan" and "The one who
makes me sad, will be sad, because
I live with Satan," when whirled
backwards.
Sanderlin maintains that in
ELO's song Fire on High the
reverse clearly states "The music is
reversible, but time is not, turn
back, turn back." Sanderlin
believes that these subliminal
messages prepare the listener's
subconscious for the rest of the
hidden meanings about to be
disclosed on the rest of the album
when played backwards.
The backward masking
technique means developing a
special ear for slurred words
forward which will form different
words when the record is played
backward, according to Sanderlin.
He added that the musicians
probably speak interchangeably
forward and backward because
prayers in the Satanic church are
chanted backward.
Ivy League newspapers
condemn oppression
On March 23, seven of eight Ivy
League newspapers published a
resolution condemning U.S.
military aid to El Salvador. "The
resolution called for an end to "an
oppressive regime in El Salvador
that clearly lacks a broad base of
support." Editions of The
Dart mouth withheld their
approval declaring that though
they supported the call for aid
withdrawal, they felt the joint
statement failed to consider the
role of left-wing forces in the
violence plaguing El Salvador.
The seven supporting editors of
the Brown Daily Herald, The
Cornell Daily Scan, The Columbia
Daily Spectator, The Dartmouth,
The Harvard Crimson, The Daily
Princetonian, The Daily
Pennsylvanian, and The Yale
Daily News, drafted a joint
editorial policy in a day-long
session at Columbia University on
March 20.
The joint resolution marks the
first time that the Ivy League
editors have issued a joint
statement since the U.S. Invasion
of Cambodia in 1970. Five
newspapers called for the
withdrawal of all American troops
from Southeast Asia. In 1969,
every Ivy League newspaper
demanded the pullout of troops
from Vietnam and supported a
two-day moratorium on attending
classes.
The seven participating editors
urged Americans to support the
following steps:
1. Eliminate all U.S. military aid to
the Duarte regime and secure a
pledge from the Reagan
Administration to keep troops and
advisors out of El Salvador.
2. Support current Congressional
resolutions which point the way
toward withdrawal of aid:
the Dodd-Tsongas-Barnes-Solarz
resolution calling for an
internationally supervised cease-
fire and negotiated setlement in El
Salvador, where we believe
conflict will never be resolved
unless other nations cooperate,
the Studds bill in the House that
would annul the Reagan
Administration's claim that
progress has been made in
honoring human rights in El
Salvador.
3. Recognize Sunday's elections for
what they are: a facade of
legitimacy for a government whose
future is in the hands of a right-
wing army bent on eliminating its
opposition at any cost.
4. Participate in grassroots
demonstrations against U.S.
policy in El Salvador. Americans
should support local initiatives
and attend Saturday's march on
Washington to protest their
government's intervention in El
Salvador.
Basketball celebration
causes campus capers
Following the North Carolina
Tar Heels' NCAA basketball
championship victory in New
Orleans two weeks ago, student
celebration began on campus and
erupted into a city-wide Chapel
Hill party.
Damage to University property
was limited to "more toilet paper
than anything else," according to
Major Charles Mauer of the UNC
Campus Police.
He added that the behavior of
this year's crowd was friendlier
than that exhibited after last year's
loss to Indiana in the NCAA finals.
The worst damage to residence
halls occurred halfway through the
same when a small fire was started.

Damage was estimated at $500.
At North Carolina Memorial
Hospital 26 people were treated for
injuries related to the celebration
and one student broke a leg.
And in Chapel Hill, 40,000
people spilled onto the "main
drag," Franklin Street, causing a
variety of damage.
At Fowler's Grocery, thousands
of dollars worth of damage
occurred when crowds poured into
the store at 10:30 that night and
began throwing food from the
shelves and urinating in the aisles.
Night manager, Billy Wood,
recalls, "We had to clean up with
shovels and rakes and wash the
floors down with hoses. It was
ridiculous."
The Happy Store experienced
$ 1000 worth of damage to their gas
pumps and buildings. At Biscuit
Towne USA, electric hand dryers
in the bathrooms were torn off the
walls. Awnings from local stores
were ripped and pulled down as
well.
The Chapel Hill Pubilc Works
Department spent at least a week
cleaning up the mess the crowd
left. But Tommy Tapp, in charge
of clean-up, found "We didn't have
any equipment that will take the
paint off the street that will not
also take the asphalt off."
