And in the Middle Ages, how
concerned people who lived close to
the world of nature were with the
faeces (sic) of animals. And what a
variety of names thay had for them:
the Crotels of a Hare, the Friants of a
Boar, the Spraints of an Otter, the
Werderobe of a Badger, the
Waggying of a Fox, the Fumets of a
Deer. Surely there might be some
words for the material so near the
heart of modem man better than
shit? What about the Problems of a
President, the Backward Passes of a
Footballer, the Deferrals of a Dean,
the Odd Volumes of a Librarian, the
Footnotes of a Ph.D., the Low
Grades of a Freshman, the Anxieties
of an Untenured Professor? As for
the parson, might it not
appropriately be called the Collect
for the Day?
To "A Roman Catholic":
While the phrase "doubly
apostate" does fit the Two
Episcopalians, Retired, I doubt that
burning them would lead to their
conversion. Rememberthat the Lord
doesn't take pleasure in the death of
an evil man; rather, that he turn from
his wickedness and live. So, when
you meet a sinner, remember that the
Word of the Lord will not go out and
return void. Preach the gospel, but
always with love.

Sooner Or Later
You'll Get Responsibility Like This.
In The Navy It's Sooner.
You're maneuvering
445 feet of guided
missile frigate through
the navigational
hazards and non-stop
traffic of one of the
world's busiest ports.
But you'll dock
safely. Because you
know your equipment.
You know your men. And even when the
responsibility weighs in at 3,600 tons...
you're ready.
After four years of college, you're
ready for more responsibility than most
civilian jobs offer. Navy officers get the
kind of job and responsibility they want,
and they get it sooner.
Navy officers are part of the manage-
ment team after 16 weeks. Instead of boot
ment experience that
could take years in
private industry. And
they earn the decision-
making authority it
a takes to make that
responsibility pay off.
As their manage-
ment abilities grow,
Navy officers can take
advantage of advanced education and
training in fields as varied as operations
management, electronics, and systems
analysis. In graduate school it would cost
you thousands; in the Navy we pay you.
And the Navy pays well. The start-
ing salary is $17,000 (more than most
companies pay). And that's on top of a
comprehensive benefits program that
can include special duty pay. After four
camp, officer candidates ; years, with regular
receive four months
of leadership training.
It's professional school-
ing designed to sharpen
their technical and
management skills.
Then, in their first
assignment, Navy
officers get manage-
