with," said Paul Havlak, editor in
chief of the Rice Thresher and he
even "accepted (Thresher
photographer) Susan Buchanan's
suggestion on a darkroom."
Actual groundbreaking and
construction of the proposed Ley
Student Center should begin after
graduation, sometime in May, last
all through the 1985-86 school
year, and should be completed, if
the tentative schedule holds, in
August 1986, in time for the new
1986-87 school year.
Four million dollars is
earmarked for the construction of
the Ley Student Center. An
additional seven hundred
thousand dollars will go for the
renovation of the existing RMC
complex.
The job of the Rice University
User Planning Committee and the
six month planning period from
last December to this May is to
ensure that this money becomes a
student center which meets Rice's
ever changing needs. "It's a matter
of getting everyone satisfied and
keeping within the budget," said
Edwin Samfield, Director of
Physical Facilities.
Some of the unique features of
the proposed 24,000 square foot
complex will be a multi-purpose
room able to seat between 150 and
200 people, several student
lounges, and an enclosed patio.
Director of the RMC Marty
Vest hopes the multi-purpose
room will accomodate those small
groups which had to use the Grand
Hall in the past because no other
space was available.
The Ley Student Center will
stand in the current temporary
customer parking lot on the sest
side of the RMC. The main
entrance to the RMC will move
from its current location on the
north side of hte building to the
west side of the proposed addition.
Parking lots 1 and J, which are
next to the RMC, should not be
significantly affected by the
construction of the Ley Student
Center arid Neill Bintord plans to
prevent the construction workers
from parking next to the
construction site, as they did with
the Herring Hall project. This time
they will have to park in the
stadium parking lot.
The Ley Student Center takes its
name from a naming gift by the
Wendel B. l ey family and their
children.
