won't grant non-blacks citizenship even if they live
there. Why does no one protest Nigeria's crimes or
Liberia's inequities (which are hardly the greatest
of black Africa's rights violations)'.'
Criticizing South Africa now is fashionable, just
as criticizing lan Smith's white government in
Rhodesia was fashionable during the Carter
administration, at which time we helped bring the
black majority to power with Robert Mugabe.
That movement succeeded in worse oppression
and a lower standard of living how virtuous of
us!
The South African government can hardly stand
as ideal, but witness the fact that the blacks there
surpass their counterparts in education and
employment. Consider also that they produce 75
percent of Africa's food. Divest, and a continent
dies. Given the relative stability and responsibility
of that government, with time and greater
education of the masses, a better system will
emerge.
In the meantime, however, as a nation which
granted civil rights only in the very recent past and
which still deals with racial discrimination, we
cannot expect an overnight change from divesting.
We have needed more than a century to achieve
any progress; South Africa has begun its progress,
but will need time as well. At any rate. South
Africa is that continent's best hope.
