CONVERTED RICE/by Thomas Abraham
If you thought elections were getting really heated. . .
Judith Shire was walking home
through the library arcade when
she noticed a friend in the reserve
room. She waved and he, of
course, waved back. At the second
the polite exchange was about to
conclude, Judith transformed into
a cylinder of flames and
disappeared. Her friend paused for
a moment, then returned to his
book remembering how Judith
was always out to impress people.
Daniel O'Hara was seated
sixteen rows back in the physics
lecture hall during a standing-
room-only thermodynamics class.
In the midst of the lecture he raised
his hand and asked the professor,
"Sir, if you will, what is the basic
difference between" enthalpy at
constant pressure and tempera-
ture, and how does it relate to
compressibility?" As the prof took
a moment before answering,
Daniel was swooshed into a raging
mini-tornado of flames and his
eye-glasses hit the front
chalkboard like a torpedo. When
silence had resumed and the smoke
lifted, the prof stared for a
moment, shrugged his shoulders,
and continued the lecture.

organization, and the S.A. has no
business giving it what is
ultimately student money.

Intramural article
called into doubt
To the editor:
I object to the biased reporting
in the article about the intramural
championship basketball game.
How can the author refer to the
"reign of the Jedi Knights" and
"Jedi domination of intramural
basketball" when their highly
recruited teams have been
eliminated in three of the four Rice
intramual basketball tournaments
in which they participated?
The author, a member of the
Jedi Knights, spends the entire
article making excuses for the
Knights' loss, giving no credit to
superior play of the WSU. The
article mentions the absence of two
pivotal players (Tony Winfrey and
Greg Floyd), but since they are not
even Rice students and not eligible
to play, their absence need not be
accounted for.
We also hear about two injuries,
a player who was not told about
the game, someone fouling out,
another reference to an injured
player with a ridiculous analogy
about the severity of his injury, and
a statement as to how well the
Knights played despite their
disadvantages (as if their problems
were imposed upon them by
someone else and not by
themselves). And, of course, the
article has to point out that two of
the WSU players are ex-Knights.
The article credits the WSU with
winning due to their depth, as if to
say they only won because they
had more people. It neglected to
mention that the WSU lost their
second leading scorer due to an
injury five minutes into the game.
The article only makes a vague
reference to the spectacular
performance of Johnny Gipson
and never mentions the
outstanding play of Doug Boake
and the remainder of the WSU.
The WSU clearly showed
themselves to be the best team this
year in defeating most of the best
teams such as Phoenix, the
Budmen, Koladso, and finally the
Jedi Knights in a lopsided 22-point
victory. I hope that the next time
the Thresher prints an article
reporting on an intramural
championship game, it is directed
more toward an account of the
game and less toward a
lamentation by the losers.

Doonesbury
pretending our campus is not
plagued by human spontaneous
combustion? How long can the
authorities of Rice pretend that we
students do not notice? I asked Dr.
Hoochin during a panicked
interview as he tried to make his
way to his car.
"Yes. We are taking action and
the board is investigating the
matter as we speak."
1 talked to scientist and friend
Dr. Hinnlaw about Hoochin's
comment.
"How can one investigate
something so random? It is
impossible. That is why I am proud
to announce the construction of
the Castible Research Center for
Spontaneous Human Combustion
and Other Strangeness to be built
right behind the library. We opted
for the quad behind Lovett Hall
but they said it would not be
architecturally sound."
Dr. Storio of space physics said,
"No one knows. Maybe galactic
gases hit one another at a certain
spot, maybe something supernat-
ural. maybe it has to do with the
fact that each victim was either
smoking, standing by a fireplace,
or on top of TNT. Like I said, no
one knows. We just have to wait
for the research."
The topic is gruesome, I admit,
but we cannot simply ignore the
evidence. Unfortunately reaction
among Rice students is not good.
For instance, Bradforg Kelly was
standing in the long line for
Saturday brunch when he hit the
floor and rather understatedlv
metamorphosed into a pile of
burning embers. People in line
threw their waffles into the pile and
were met by immediate results. I
talked with one Rice student
majoring in philosophy.
"What can one do? We're all
going to die anyway. Is it really
fire? It's more an illusion, not
really there. A fragment of our
dreams. Who cares?"
This view constrasts with that of
a Rice senior double-E who said,
"It's just an attitude problem, 1
think."
Whatever the case, the conflict
still survives. The board, word has
it, is now investigating a campus-
wide sprinkler system to be called
the Felix Cronkie Memorial
Wish'n'Wash. The lab is still under
harsh review from Houston
authorities over drainage
problems. We as students can only
wait and watch, it seems. Things
move so slowly across desktops.
The last reported case was last
semester while the M.O.B. was in
the middle of one of their half-time
shows. The show's subject was
biblical events. Heather Wifna, a
show assistant, was cast as the
burning bush. As the show
assistant playing Moses turned to
her, she. . .
I need not continue.
