Sailors host regatta
continued from page 21
just ahead of the valiant Rice
team. SMU went on to take third
place for the day.
The loss to SMU was
particularly painful to some
sailors from all teams, who had
hoped to grind their little noses
into the surf in return for their
somewhat antisocial attitude
between races. Some sailors,
however, did believe that they
saw surf enter the noses of
several SMU team members
whose nostrils were trimmed just
a bit high for the wind speed.
Indeed, wind speed was good
for the race overall, and the sky
was almost entirely clear the
whole day. The weather looked as
though it might be conducive to
tanning, but such was not the
case, as sub-sixties temperatures
on the bay chilled all would-be
sunbathers.
The Rice club had volunteered
to host the race only a week
before, and, under the
circumstances, organized it quite
efficiently.
The Houston Yacht Club,
located deceptively far from
Houston, kindly agreed to
sponsor the event, providing
boats and markers for the race
committee, in addition to tran-
sportation from shore to the
course.
The Rice Sailing Club would
like to congratulate honorary
member Dennis Connor for bring-
ing home the America's cup.
Many a club member cheered
Dennis on late into the night.
