Cultural exchange brings Dutch music to Rice
Dutch Music Month
Shepherd School
Concert Series
From now until mid-September,
the Shepherd School is sponsoring
a series of concerts which focuses
on an active exchange of Dutch and
American contemporary music.
This event has been organized by
the Foundation for Cultural Ex-
change The Netherlands-USA and
the Netherlands-Texas Cultural Ex-
change Program, Inc.
The concerts involve several
prominent Dutch artists and allow
the students of the Shepherd School
to experience outside musical influ-
ences.
What follows is an interview with
Mrs. Wilma Borkert, the organizer
of the "The Icebreaker," the center
of contemporary music in Amster-
dam as well as the nickname for the
event.
Who had the initial idea of this
cultural exchange program?
The International Affairs Office
of the Ministry of Cultural Affairs.
The idea was to concentrate part of
their funds on a certain program. To
organize such a program, they
founded the Foundation for Cultural
Exchange in Netherlands-USA.
Why Texas?
Texas is the "gateway to the
South" of the United States. Also,
the developments in Texas' fine arts
form an interesting complement to
the European art scene.
Hew did The Icebreaker get in-
volved?
The Foundation asked other or-
ganizations to help out with the
Percussion group The Hague performs Monday at noon in the RMC.
DUTCH MUSIC MONTH
shepherd school concert series
with the musicians.
What do you consider as the high-
lights of the upcoming concerts?
Each group is very special but an
unusual feature will be the perscus-
sion group The Hague, which will be
conducted by a computer.
Will there also be concerts with
Rice music students in Amsterdam?
What we have here is a Dutch ini-
tiative. We are hoping for a reaction
from your side. Nothing has been set
up.
I understand this is a ten-year ex-
change program. What is going to
happen in the future?
We are not working on that, we are
just doing this one project. The Foun-
dation will decide about future ac-
tivities, since they also feature Dutch
films and art.

planning and organizing.
What is The Icebreaker all about?
It is the center of contemporary
music in Amsterdam.
How long has it existed?
Since 1979. It is still a small organi-
zation with only 40 people working for
it.
Who started "The Icebreaker" ?
Jan Wulfs, the director of The
Icebreaker's "child."
How do you finance The Ice-
breaker?
We get money from the cily of
Amsterdam and the Ministry of Cul-
ture. •
What were the main problems of
putting this event together?
The distance between Holland and
Texas. We started work on this pro-
gram in December, 1986.
How were the groups selected?
Two ways actually. First, we tried
to get an instrumentally balanced pro-
gram. Additionally, we took in ac-
count what the people over here
would like.
How did you actually choose the
program, the composers and the
pieces?
Our first criteria was that the
groups should play at least half of the
program from Dutch composers. We
worked it out on an individual basis
