College experiment explores racism
by Felisa Yang
Residents of Littlefield Dormitory
at the University of Texas at Austin
participated in an experiment de-
signed to show what it feels
like to be a victim of racial
discrimination.
The experiment was
designed by Littlefield
Resident Assistant
Heather McCl'ellan,
along with three other
resident assistants. The designers
wanted to emphasize a point made
in a similar experiment on brown-
and blue-eyed school children in the
1960s.
Of the 160 students in the all-
female, freshman dorm, 53 partici-
pated in the study. Students were
randomly assigned to wear either a
green or blue ribbon, representing
two different "racial groups." The
colored ribbons had to be
on display at all times.
Each participant
was given a list of
rules to follow, in-
cluding where and
when she could eat
in the cafeteria or use
the bathroom. Blues and greens
were not allowed to associate with
each other in public; those doing so
were subject to ridicule.
The participants were told that
THE HEDGES
they were a part of a research project,
but most figured out the point of the
experiment. Even so, they said they
felt the discrimination.
At a debriefing at the end of the
week, the residents spoke of their
experiences and some revealed their
personal encounters with racial dis-
crimination. Some concluded that
despite recent advances to end ra-
cial inequality, many people still suf-
fer daily from the barbs of discrimi-
nation.
"I want to [show] people first-
hand what it would be like to be
discriminated against," said
McClellan.

decision to accept the position.
As the new director, Sutton hopes
to improve the Student Center so
that it enhances the residential col-
leges without replacing it.
"I think that one of Rice's stron-
gest aspects is its residential college
system," he said. He envisions a Stu-
dent Center that exists "not to com-
pete with them [the colleges] but to
meet the needs they're not meet-

She also expressed hope that in
the future, parking fee changes will
be addressed by the committee,
mitigating the confusion that oc-
curred this year.
"I hope that by the end of next
year parking will never have to
be dealt with like this," Iskander

ing.
Sutton's main goal during his first
few weeks as Student Center direc-
tor is to meet with students and staff.
"I want to spend time with [them]
about ... meeting student needs,"
he said.
Sutton plans to seek student in-
put in such areas as Student Center
renovations. Citing Willy's Pub as
one example where student input is
important, he said that he intends to
work with students to "give it the
same old-time feel."
Sutton,obtained his bachelor of
science degree in microbiology from
Ohio State University in 1985. He
received his masters degree in
higher education and student affairs
from Ohio State in 1987.
One of Sutton's first tasks will be
working with Sanborn and a search
committee to find a replacement for
outgoing Student Center Assistant
Director Shelly Garrett. She will be
leaving at the end of the month to
take a job at the University of Illi-
nois.
"I'll be closer to my family,"
Garrett said.
