4 Baker students relocate a SRC
freshman s car but fail to gel it up the
steps into, the commons'. -
The freshman girls all think
we're perverts because every
time they wear their fwhite j O-
Week shirts, they get wet. It's
like, "Stand right over there,
veah, ha ha ha.'"
— Chris Sanders, SRC advisor
Orientation vvki-k is almost over.
You've screamed and yelled, run,
gotten douched, slept a little, taken
a lew tests, and been introduced to a lot of
people, places and advice You are Rice
I Iniversity's new students, and this past week
has been yours.
()■ Week formally bygau on Monday fright
with matriculation, held indoors due to inter-
mittent rain. With only hall ol' Stude Hall
seated, Will Rice College started off with a
wave in the Iron) right corner of lite room and
presented posters that read, "Alicia Adams
prefers to ()o Solo" and "Together we wrtf rule
the universe/university."
The team from Wiess College made "T W"
hand signs, and some students seated in the
upper balcony responded bv making disdain-
ful gestures with slightly opened lists moving
up and down. Other*?1 below
frantically tried to figure out
how to make an "S" for "Team
Wiess Sucks." WRC mem-
bers silently applauded with
open palms facing the ceil-
ing, per an 0-Week matricu-
lation policy that there be no
clapping or cheering. When
they did, the same half of the
upper balcony moved their fists in the same
slightly obscene way
The orchestra played "< frpheus in the I In
derworld." belter known as the can can, and
the entire auditorium clapped, somehow in
time, together. The biggest surprise of the
night came soon alter Vice President of Stu-
dent Affairs ZenaidoCamacho said, "Welcome.
Welcome. Welcome " Four Jones College
streakers, body-painted green and purple,
-scrambled out of garbage cans and ran down-
the aisles. Later on, three banners were shaken
out from the upper aisle to tell everyone that
"Jones Wins Again." Brown College, how-
ever, had silver-clad representative Ryan Levy
at the lectern.
"Whatever." Levy said, making a " W" with
both hands, Brown cheered by "dropping
iron," revealing colorful, boxer-dad behinds.
nh
nied a Lovett College athlete to present
Camacho with a medal. In the back, Lovett
chanted, "Ali, Ali, Ali."
As everyone walked out of Stude, an ever
vigilant Luke Skywalker leapt onto the stage
to engage Darth Vader in a sparring match.
When the colleges walkedthrough the
Sallyport, Baker College saw that it already
had three devil-faced representatives trium-
phantly perched on Willy's statue.'What they
hadn't seen was WRC and Dartlr Vader strid-
ing into the academic quadrangle not five
minutes earlier to demand thai the Baker
studentsjmove aside.
"You rf* on our statue," Vader intoned, WRC
had planned to dress Willy in Vader's clothes.
At that time, only 50 feet away, the entire
<"iuad was still quiet. The moon was veiled by
thin cloud cover, creating a corona. Lovett's
slightly ragged Olympic-ring bal-
loon arrangement floated in from
one side of the Quad, and Team
Wiess began yet another attempt
to fly the war pig from Fondren's
lower roof.
"Yeah, it never works. We
fa i led agai n," on e Wiessi i la n said.
"But at least you can read it this time."
President Malcolm (iillis, Camacho and
others waited in the Sallyport -r Gillis to
exchange high-fives and Camacho to shake
hands Not that it mattered, but t|ierr were a
few miss# when freshmen rushed through in
mobs. Sid Richardson College members re-
ceived star treatment: a limousine and a red
carpet, to accompany the humidity and iiki^
qnitoes, WKC's Vader took up a post in the
middle of the Sallyport and had to contend
with several rowdy individuals who tried to
snatch his lime green light saber.
It was a good ceremony, and the speeches
were all well-received, (iillis and Student As
sociation President Maryana tskander got
standing ovations. despite the few glassy stares
ami noddtftg heads (ready for classes, obvi-
ously) But that was to be expected After all.
