Hoard of Visitors voted 9 to 8 to
admit women to the state-run mili-
tary college for the first time in its
157-year history.
In June, the United States Su-
preme Court ruledthat VMl's policy
of admitting only-men discriminated
against women and violated the
Consitution's guarantee of equal
protection under the law. However,
the ruling did not explicitly order
i lie institution to admit women, and
some, board members and alumni
had lobbied vigorously for VMI to
remain all-male by becoming a pri-
vate college.
Although VMI was the sole de-
fendant in the case, the decision
also applied to the-CTitadol in South
Carolina, the nation's only other all
male public college. The governing
board of the Citadel voted to admit
women just two days after the court's
ruling, f ollowing the VMI decision,
70 applications have been sent out
in response to requestsfrom Tetnale
high school seniors. Meanwhile, the
college's superintendent, Major
General Josiah Hunting III, formed
several panels to study the integra-
tion of female cadets,

Duk« appearance sparks
clash on college campus
pavid Duke's appearance in a
debate over a California ballot initia-
tive on affirmative action prompted
a stormy protest at California State
University at Northridge last week.
When a group of more than 100
affirmative action activists attempted
to halt the event by charging the
doors and banging on windows at
the debate site, Los Angeles police
officers moved in to stop them. Sev-
eral protesters lobbed rocks at the
officers, who fired rubber pellets
and wielded rubber batons. The
university police reported six ar-
rests.
The subject of the debate was
Proposition 209. a measure that
would end race- and sex-based prel
erences at all state-run institutions,
including colleges,
