Hype! — Motion-
Picture soundtrack
Hype! is a documentary
g -£ | about the "grunge" rock ex-
^ plosion t hat has taken place
this decade in the north-
western slates. The soundtrack to
the film presents an eclectic and
interesting variety of tracks that al-
low one to see the development of
the music form we currently con
sider "alternative."
A cautionary word to those that
will consider purchasing this album
because it has the "grunge" label
attached to it: This CD will offend
you, The initial tracks on the CI) by
such acts as the Fastbacks, Wipers
and Li-Men are loud, noisy and hardly
what we currently consider grunge
(such as Pearl Jam).
The folks at Sub Pop who put
together this compilation probably
put these tracks on here because
they wanted to emphasize that
grunge developed from punk rock,
and also to prevent a storm of young-
sters from buying the indie release
simply because it contained the mu-
sic buzzword of today. However, for
those interested in owning every CD
that contains the archetypal grunge
bands, Hype! contains previously
unreleased tracks from Pearl Jam,
Nirvana and Soundgarden.
Some of the more impressive
tracks on the CD are found near the
end. Mark Lanegan's (vocalist,
Screaming Trees) acoustically-
driven "River Rise" is definitely the
highlight of the CD, "Fire's Coining
I3own""by Pigeohhead indicates the
direction of the future of grunge,
namely its transformation to the
sonic rack style The compilation
also contains tracks from the Po-
sies, Tad, Supersuckers, Flop and
Dead Moon.
Hype! represents the work of 22
fine musical groups that have influ-
enced rock as we know it. Each one
of these bands was selected by the
knowledgeable Sub Pop people be-
cause they have influenced the mu-
sic <jf the '90s. and with it ;i whole

Plexi
CHEER UP
- Plexi was formed in 1M3
^ former University of
7 Southern California film
student Michael Angelos,
His friend Michael Barragari joined
the band and the two began writing
together. Seeking spiritual guidance,
they attended aTaoist retreat, where
they discovered drummer Norm
Block. Block, who had recently de-
fected from the California cult to
which his family had belonged to
since he was a child, was at the
retreat for the same reasons as
Angelos and Barragan The three
then moved in together and began
to experiment with yoga and her-
metic alchemy. The result: Two EPs
'with some small Dos Angeles-and
Seattle-based labels and their first
full-length release. Cheer Up, with
Sub Pop records.
How do Nirvana's power chords,
Trent Reznor's dreary lyrics arid
Radiohead's sonic guitar work sound
when all placed together? While this
comparison hardly addresses all of
Plexi"s sounds, it is the most accu-
rate description using big-name
bands. Thus, Plexi Could easily be
pioneers in sonic rock, the future of
alternative music.
The most impressive aspect of
the CD is the dynamics of the al-
bum, ThisCD has two requirements:
a pair of stereo headphones and 40
minutes to listen to the whole thing.
Cheer Up is not the kind of CD in
which you flip to a certain track, but
rather the kind you put in the CD
changer you have in your trunk
drive home. Each track wii
the
all emotions experien
from listening to many music gen
from folk to hardcore. The al
almost tells a story, with each tr
being a chapter containing unpur
dictable changes which keep the lis
tener in a deep trance
Cheer Up opens up with "Forest
Ranger," probably the most impres-
sive track. The digitally enhanced
"Roller Rock Cam" peacefully brings
"Peel" with its slow repeating
bassline and stereo effects. "Bunny"
has its elements of gothic rock in it
and adds a somber feel to the Cheer
Lip novel. The happy ending comes
with "Star Star," which is one of the
few acoustical tracks, containg cel-
los enhancing the bass riffs.
Not many bands can be thought
of as helping music's progress.
Plexi's latest release has indicated
the direction that alternative rock
should betaking. Any appreciatorof
current rock music will enjoy Cheer
Up. And if that is not convincing
enough, according to Sub Pop
Records, Plexi is Keanu Reeves' fa-
vorite band.
