Arab
with ItTMl
The Arab League passed a reso-
lution that recommend# all Arab
countries with normal ties to Israel
to freeze their relations wit It Israel
because of its settlement policies.
The resolution, which was passed
during a closed session on Sunday,
came after protests by many Arab
and Muslim countries over Israel's
plan to build (),300-uliit housing
project for Jews in east Jerusalem.
Palestinians want this historically
Arab sector of Jerusalem to be the
capital of their would-be state, but
Israel still wants to keep the entire
city.
After hearing emotional appeals
by Yasser Arafat, Arab foreign min-
isters also recommended the sus-
pension of Arab participation in mul-
tilateral peace talks and implemen-
tation of an economic boycott of Is-
rael until a "lasting and just peace is
established ."
Arafat has described Israel's fic-
tions as "a declaration of war" and

People protest National
Front Party's racist agenda
More than 35.000people flooded
the streets of France on Saturday to
protest the weekend presence of
France's burgeoning far-right Na-
tional Front party
Squads of security police backed
by riot vehicles kept the largely
peaceful marchers Trom getting
closer than seven blocks from the
convention ball, where 2,200 mem-
bersofthe National Front assembled
to prepare for next spring's legisla
live elections. Above the marchers
heads bobbed signs reading, "Rac-
ism is a national affront" and other
anti-facist, anti-racist, and anti-Nazi
refrains.
The National Front and its presi-
dent, Jean-Marie LePen, are notori
ous in much of France for their state-
ments about race and immigration.
LePen, known for his racist senti-
ments. has openly called for the de-
portation of immigrants to create
jobs for "real" French people.
According to polls, 15 percent of
the French electorate support the
party.
The march united French Social-
ist politicians, labor leaders, left-wing
intellectuals, radical activists, street
performers and other citizens an-
gered by the resurgence of intoler-
ance.
