l"hree of Rice's top tennis players
headed to South Bend, Ind., to com-
pete in a battle of top college play-
ers. Junior Efe Ustundag, senior
Shane Stone and sophomore Robert
Collins played at the 1997 Tom Fallon
Invitational at the University of Notre
Dame this past weekend.
Stone who, along with Collins,
was hurt for a large part of last sea-
son, said that the matehplay was
helpful and that "it was a positive
step for the team to have everyone
healthy and playing well,"
Stone and Ustundag competed
in flight A singles, and Collins com-
peted in flight B singles. While the
Owls did not win either division,
both Stone and Collins posted strong
finishes. The team of Stone-
Ustundag looked tough in flight A
doubles.
In singles play. Stone eliminated
l.ukas Horacek of DePaul Univer-
sity in a close 7-5, 7-6 (8-6) victory
before falling to Jamil- Gordon of
Purdue University, 6-3, 6-4, in the
quarterfinals.
In flight B singles. Collins slashed
his way to the finals, taking just two
sets per match to eliminate Ryan
Johnstone of the University of Iowa,
Trent Miller of Notre Dj
Alexander Soeters of the
of William & Mary and Mark
Overdevest t>f Notre Dame, la his
championship appearance. Collins
was edged out in a tough 3-6, 6-3,
6-7 loss to M ike Passarelta of Harvard
University.
Stone and Ustundag, Rice's dy-
namic flight A doubles duo. easily
defeated the teams Muddle-Crick of
Indiana State University and Aukeps-
Johnstone of Iowa before suffering a
tight 8-6 loss to Nebraska's Verzi-
Bergerheim in the quarterfinals.
The Owls, it seems, are off to a
strong start. "Over all. it was a good
tournament," Stone said.

Rice ties for 13th in opening tourney
Timothy Werner

The men's golf team tied for 13th
place in a field of 14 teams at the
Missouri Bluffs Intercollegiate in St.
Charles, Mo., this past weekend.
Owls' Head Coach Jim Casteneda
believes that the team will improve
its play as the season moves along.
"This was our first tournament,
while for some of the teams we were
up against, il was their second or
third," he said. "We were not pleased,
but it's important to have [a tourna-
ment | under our belts. We Should
get ])etter as the year progresses."
Casteneda cited the competitive-
ness of the field as another limiting
factor.
'The field we played in was very
difficult. Expectations were [that)
we would finish near the bottom, but
there were some teams there,
namely Missouri, Air Force and
Colorado, that we should have beat,"
Casteneda said.
Despite the poor performance of
the team, one bright spot was the
play of junior C.W. Mallon. For
Mallon, who tied for 23rd overall,
finishing with a sevenover-par 220.
the Missouri Intercollegiate was his
first tournament.
"It was joy and trepidation watch-
ing C.W. play," Castenda said. "I
was extrenfc'ly delighted with his
performance, especially considering
this was his first tournament and he
was our fifth qualifier."
The other tournament qualifing
golfers were freshman Frederik
Dejaeghere and sophomores Chris
Connolly, Andy Rapp ami Drew
Conrad, who finished in ties for 51st,
54th. 6lstand 69th, respectively.
Casteneda said that the team fea-
tures a variety of experienced play-
ers. -
Dejaeghere is considered the
outstandingjuniorgolferinhishome
nation of Belgium, and junior Kalani
Kiaaina is a two-time Hawaii state
champion.
The future of the men's golf looks
strong as well, Dejaeghere and fel-
low freshman Corey Henegar will
undoubtedly gain experience as the
year continues. **
"Playing everyday is new for me,"
Dejaeghere said. "In high school, in
Europe, I could only play on week-
ends. 1 think, I hope, that this will
improve my play."
Junior transfer student Drew
Scott will become eligible to com-
pete for Rice this spring. Scott led
the team in the qualifying rounds
leading up to the Missouri Intercol-
legiate. However, because of NCAA
rules regarding transfer students,
he is ineligible to play until next
semester.
The Owls go back into action
Oct. 20-21 at Texas Tech University's
Red Raider Invitational in Lubbock.
Before then, the golfers will go
through five qualifying rounds to
determine the makeup of the five-
man team that will go to Lubbock.
Mallon qualifies automatically due
to his performance this past week-
end.
"We don't know what personnel
we're taking [to the Red Raider Invi-
tational) yet, but I think we'll play a
lot better," Casteneda said.
