Hie men's track and field lean t
ran to a sixth-place finish at the
Western Athletic Conference In-
door Championships Feb. 26-28.
The competition, held at the Air
Force Academy in Colorado
Sprjngs, Colo., featured some of
the country's best teams, includ-
ing WAC champion Brtgham
Young University.
Head Coach Ray Davidson
said he was satisfied with the
results because the WAC is so
competitive "It was an incred-
ible meet. I think the kids per-
formed very well. It was just a
tougher conference," he said.
Early on, sophomore Rashad
Stafford looked like he would
dominate the 55-meter hurdles.
He posted a provisional qualify-
ing time of'7.26 seconds in the
preliminary trials but then fell
during finals. Stafford's prelimi-
nary time, though, was enough
to qualify him for the NCAA Na-
tional Indoor Championships to
be held in Indianapolis this week
end. Stafford also placed first in
the pentathlon and was a part of
the third-place 4 x 400relay team.
Junior Drexell Owusu quali-
fied for nationals in the triple
jump, Byjumping 52 feet,9inches
— his best mark this year —
Owusu took first place. Owusu
said he had been frustrated over
most of the season because he
was not jbmping to
potential."(
out and did wl
doing," he said. Owusu also
placed third in the long jump with
a distance of 24 feet, 5 inches.
Senior Andrew Burrow placed
sixth in the 400 with a provisional
qualifying time of 47.17. Davidson
said that Burrow would have won
conference last year with the
same time
Although Burrow will not be
running the 400 at nationals, a
previous time in the 800 was fast
enough to qualify him for that
event. Burrow was also a part of
the 4 x 400 relay team that barely
missed qualifying for nationals.
The Owls received additional
points from junior Jamie Price,
who placed fifth in the 800 with a
time of 1:56.47, and the distance
medley relay team which placed
third in 10:34.02.
The national qualifiers will
travel to Indianapolis this week-
end. In two weeks, the Owls will
begin their outdoor season at the
Texas Southern University He-
lavs.

The team was positive about the
performance of both the men and
women. "We always set high goals,"
Assistant Coach Brian Smith said. "I
do not think that you can ever swim
as well as you would like. We can
always do better, but almost every-

sity dominated ttie competition and
finished first with a score of 912.

a distant second with 593 points.
The highlight of the meet for the
Rice women occured when two Owls
qualified for the NCAA competition,
to be held March 19-21. Senior co-
captain Cory Teague qualified for
her third NCAA meet by winning
the 100-yard fly in 54.67 seconds.
She also received NCAA consider-

very impressive,"
