Owls up record to 10-1 at Rice Invite
by Ben Weston
FOB THE THRESHER
Playing host to the Crowne Plaza
Rice Invitational over the weekend,
the Rice volleyball team entered the
tournament with an unblemished
record, high expectations and higher
hopes.
The Owls first faced Mississippi
State University. The Bulldogs
showed real character in not giving
up early, but they failed to overtake
the Owls.
Rice played an uninspired game,
with five service reception errors,
compared to a season average of 1.7
per game, and four blocking errors,
compared to an average of 1.6 per
game.
But they still swept the match. A
15-4 pasting by the Owls was sand-
wiched between a pair of 15-12 wins,
giving the team its ninth win.
The Owls' second matchup pit-
ted them against the 8-1 Fairfield
University. Rice started slowly, los-
ing 15-12 in a marathon first game,
going 14 rotations at one point with-
out scoring.
The Owls then succumbed to the
Stags as Fairfield took the next two
games 15-13 and 15-12, respectively.
Nothing seemed to go right for
the Owls in the match as they
doubled their season team average
for attack errors with 26 and had
three players with negative hitting
percentages.
"I think we were a little flat," Head
Coach Julio Morales said earlier this
week. 'The tempo of play that the
girls displayed was not the one that
they had been displaying all along."
The Owls had not played up to
their potential against Fairfield, but
they were not about to make the
same mistakes in their final match.
The team was mentally prepared
for the match against the University
of Texas at El Paso. After scoring
five points behind the serving of
senior middle blocker Libra Taylor,
the Owls quickly finished the game,
15-9.
After that 10-rotation match, they
lapsed into the inconsistency that
plagued last year's team, taking 27
rotations to finally pull out a 15-12
win in the next game.
When they came out of the locker
room, the Owls were ready to put
the game away.
Senior middle blocker Tiffany
Carrethers took control from the
start, scoring three of the Owls' first
five points, but the rout did not re-
ally begin until Carrethers got the
sideout to end the fifth rotation. Her
spike knocked a UTEP player to the
ground, and things snowballed from
there against the Miners.
Sophomore setter Nil Kalogoglu
and Taylor combined for a monstei'
block for the next point. After fresh-
man outside hitter Leigh Leman
knocked a spike through two play-
ers' arms and Carrethers hit an ace
on the next serve, the Owls had the
game in hand.
Junior outside hitter and team
captain Kelly Smith ended the tour-
nament in style with yet another
powerful kill, giving the Owls a 15-3
Ijlowout win.
After the match, Carrethers and
Smith were named to the all-tourna-
ment team for the third consecutive
tournament. "It's a great honor and
it pushes me to do better," Smith
said Monday.
Carrethers, the team's oldest
player, was pleased with her effort
this weekend, as was Morales. 'Tif-
fany has been very stable through-
out all the tournaments," Morales
said. "She's a very skillful player,
she's a very good athlete."
Carrethers relishes her role as a
crowd-pleaser. "It was so nice to be
at home in front of people, so I kind
of felt I had to do well," she said.
Leman, one of the team's young-
est players, had a breakthrough
weekend, earning significant play-
ing time in each game, including
starting and playing every minute of
the UTEP match. Smith praised
Leman for her dominating presence
in the third game.
"Her energy on the court is awe-
some," Smith said of Leman, the
Houston Chronicle's Most Valuable
Player for 1998. "She's such a spark-
plug."
Morales also praised her energy
and aggressiveness. "Leigh is a very
talented young player," Morales
said.
This weekend, the Owls will
travel to Philadelphia for the Drexel/
Villanova Invitational. There they
take on Wagner University, co-host
Villanova University and St. Peter's
University.
Morales did not mince words
when talking about his plans for the
weekend. "Well, we're going out to
win the tournament," he said. "It's
as simple as that."
