THE RICE THRESHER OPINION FRIDAY,
NOVEMBER 13, 1998
LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
TERRORISM . from Page 4
desperate people who have been
trampled on by lying superpowers."
Being a victim of whatever real or
imagined crime does not justify
the killing and maiming of civilians,
but this is exactly what terrorists
do.
Terrorism is a real threat to peace
and harmony. There can be no de-
nying the fact that there are cross-
continent connections between ter-
rorist groups that involve the con-
stant funneiing of funds, munitions,
manpower and even expertise to
centers of terrorist activity.
Frequently masquerading as re-
ligious warriors and cashing in on
the sentiments of their co-religion-
ists, many terrorists move about
quite securely, in areas outside of
their terrorist operations, gathering
monetary and political support for
their criminal acts. Recognition of
these terrorists and their threat to
world peace and immediate action
to prevent terrorism's growth are
vital to avoiding a chaotic
future.
Regarding the author's comment
ojfthe U.S. role in counterterrorism,
the United States does play a signifi-
cant role in fighting terrorism. A
peace agreement between the Is-
raeli and Palestinian governments
is a major step toward combating
terrorism in that region.
As for the author's call for atten-
tion to Kosovo, the United States'
intervention is crucial for NATO's
proposed actionsagainst the aggres-
sor (an example of state-sponsored
terrorism/aggression — but this,
the author does not mention in her
biased and incorrect list of coun-
tries sponsoring terrorism). There
doesn't appear to be any govern-
ment as poised as the United
States' in securing peace in that re-
gion.
In "U.S. war against 'Islamic ter-
rorism' unwarranted, rife with hy-
pocrisy" (Sept. 25) Ayesha Najam
mentions the negative fallouts of the
U.S. bombing of terrorist sites in
Sudan and Afghanistan as reasons
for not undertaking the bombings.
While not condoning U.S. actions in
this instance, we'd like to inspect
some of the reasons she gives for
faulting U.S. actions. Among those
reasons is the Pakistani prime
minister's announcement that his
government will move toward Is-
lamic Shariat law.
It is difficult to see a causal link
between the United States's actions
and the prime minister's desire to
change Pakistan's legal system. A
recent article in Time magazine ex-
amines the real motives behind the
attempt to implement the Shariat —
diversionary tactics to subdue grow-
ing economic and political unrest.
Another reason quoted as a nega-
tive fallout are bin Laden's follow-
ers' statements. Does this mean that
the United States has to take con-
sent from terrorists sworn to
damage it before acting against
them?
On a different note, one cannot
fault the United States for not fight-
ing terrorism on every front in the
world. Nor can one fault it for choos-
ing its fights. Expecting a single
nation among hundreds to play the
role of an impartial policeman for
the world is foolhardy.
As a final comment on the letter
on U.S. counterterrorism, not rec-
ognizing the positive role played by
the United States in fighting terror-
ism and, worse yet, taking the side
of terrorists cannot certainly form
an impartial or fair examination of
U.S. counterterrorism.
