Tannie Etta James, the grand matriarch of her family, departed this life
on November 1, 1986. She was born to the union of William and Mahalia
Judkins on July 29, 1889, the 12th child, and last survivor of 14 children. She
attended schools in Wharton and Houston, Texas and Conroe College. Her
early years, post college, were spent teaching elementary school in Wharton
and Pledger, Texas.
In 1916, she married the late Rev. S. H. James, Sr., who became a practicing
minister which resulted in extensive travel in the states. To this parentage,
seven children were born, only one of which is deceased. Upon moving to
San Antonio, where Rev. James accepted the pastorship of Second Baptist
Church in 1940, Mrs. James became affiliated with many organizations,
some of which include the following: President of the Women's Missionary
Union, and Ministers, Deacons and Trustees Wives Organization, both at
Second Baptist Church; an Instructor in the School of Religion of the Texas
State Sunday School and Baptist Training Congress; and the La Grange
District Women's Convention. She was a devout christian and an active
member of Second Baptist Church. Her community affiliations include
membership in the YWCA, the American Cancer Society and the Utopia Club.
She was honored nationally, at state level, and locally as "Mother Of The
Year."
Mrs. James leaves as her legacy, her children: five sons, Dr. S. H. James, Jr.,
San Antonio, Texas; Dr. A. Lincoln James, Chicago, Illinois: Dr. Allix B.
James, Richmond, Virginia; Mr. W. A. James, Houston, Texas; Dr. H. Rhett
James, Dallas, Texas; and one daughter, Ms. Alva James McNeal, San
