Obituary
Dr. Alfreda L. Lawson McDaniel was born April 17, 1940 to
Rev. James M. Lawson, Sr. and Mrs. Celestine E. Crawford-
Lawson. Alfreda was one of three children born to this union.
Alfreda accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior at a very
young age and was active in the church all of her life.
Alfreda Lawson-McDaniel attended Grant Elementary School,
Douglass Junior High School, Phyllis Wheatley High School and
graduated from St. Peter Claver Academy. She later graduated
Summa Cum Laude from the University of the Incarnate Word
with a BS in Nursing. In 1973-74, she attended the University of
Texas at San Antonio where she majored in Environmental
Management of Human Resources. Afterward, she attended Our
Lady of the Lake University. In 1986, Dr. Alfreda Lawson-
McDaniel was honored with a Doctorate of Humanitarianism
from the Guadalupe Theological Seminary. This was in
recognition of her vision and hard work in the design,
development, implementation, and management of the Nurse's
Clinic in San Antonio, Texas. The Nurse's Clinic was one of the
first successful models for an Organized Neighborhood Healthcare
system focusing on the Seniors, the disabled and children.
She continued her post graduate studies at the University of
Houston, majoring in Psychology with a minor in Statistics.
In 2005, Alfreda became an author when she published her
first book, "The Nurses Clinic - Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow",
which is available on-line at www.authorhouse.com
Left to cherish her precious memories are: her brother, Mr.
James M. Lawson, Jr.; her sister, Mrs. Ira Jean Lawson-Farley
(Jesse), children - Dr. Ellsworth Alexander James (Stephanie);
Mr. Theodore F. Grant, Mr. John A. Grant and Mrs. Pamela Diane
McDaniel; her grandchildren - Madeline Sophie James, Deven
Alexander-Benjamin James, Jaden Dakota James, Jose Manuel
Menchaca, III, Zachary K. Menchaca and Morgan R. Pearson,
and a host of uncles, aunts, and cousins. Her parents preceded
her and are waiting to receive her.
Alfreda was very ambitious and focused. Once she set her mind
on something, there was no stopping her until the job was done.
She was also an accomplished Musician, Voice Coach and Choir
director for many churches in the San Antonio area.
God saw you were getting tired
And a cure was not to be.
So He put his arms around you
And whispered, come to me.
With tearful eyes we watched you, and
saw you pass away.
Although we loved you dearly,
We could not make you stay.
Golden hearts stopped beating
Hard working hands at rest.
God broke our hearts to prove to us,
He Only Takes The Best.
