Melveline "Mel" Townsend Prosser was born on October 10,1929, in Atoka, Oklahoma.
Melveline was a graduate of Manual Training High School in Muskogee, Oklahoma. In the
State of Oklahoma, she was a trained, licensed and accomplished cosmetologist. Mel quickly
discovered her love for the State of Texas and moved to San Antonio in 1948. On January 22,
1958 she married Frank Prosser the love of her life. Frank and Mel shared forty-seven years of
wedded bliss together.
Mel poured her heart and soul into her family and rearing her three daughters, Toni
Morgan, Francine Prosser-Johnson and Bonnie Prosser Elder. Mel was and will always be a
steadfast and immovable force behind the lives and success of "Her Girls". She made sure they
were appropriately dressed, attended Sunday school and church and enrolled in Christ-centered
schools to assure that they received a quality education grounded in the Lord. Recognizing
that a high school education for the girls was a good foundation, but only the beginning, Mel
encouraged Toni, Fran and Bonnie to continue their education. Her encouragement led to all
of the girls achieving their academic and educational goals. MePs "encouragement" always led
to positive results. In addition to the direction and purpose Mel provided for her girls, she was
a consistent, positive influence in the lives of a number of students in the San Antonio
Independent School District. She was known to counsel, assist and reprimand any student in
need of a firm or guiding hand.
While Mel was active in the lives of her family, she was also active in a number of other
organizations in the San Antonio community including: The San Antonio Chapter of Jack
and Jill of America Inc., Van Courtlandt Auxiliary, Altrusa Social Club, Friendship Baptist
Church Choir, Second Baptist Church Chancel Choir, Second Baptist Church Deborah's Circle,
Second Baptist Church Team #3 Mid-Week Service Food Committee, Coliseum Park
Neighborhood Association, San Antonio Mothers Service Organization, and the City wide
Widow Ladies with Hattitude. For over twenty years, Mel was committed to a healthy lifestyle
and a constant figure at the Davis-Scott YMCA.
Melveline leaves to cherish her memory three daughters: Toni Morgan, Francine Prosser-
Johnson (Raymond "R.A."), and Bonnie Prosser Elder (Dr. Edward Carl); four grandchildren:
Gynell Demore, William Demore, Kevin Demore and Marissa Brooke Elder. Additionally, she
leaves a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, friends, a surrogate mother, Lillian
Spears, and two Godchildren, Shamia and Clayton Priestly. Her siblings preceding her in
death were Robert Townsend and Dorine Taylor. Mel's loving husband, Frank Prosser, preceded
her in death in 2005.
