Honorable John J. Herrera
-2-
June 26, 1964
I am taking this opportunity of giving you, not only my per-
sonal endorsement of such a plan, but also to allow'you to
use my name in whatever manner you see fit to get the support
and cooperation of LULAC Councils throughout the Nation to en-
dorse the setting up of said fund. It is our mutual understanding
that the moneys received from contributions made, from whatever
source derived, will be used for the specific use and benefit
of the two children of Gus C. Garcia. In soliciting the funds,
we should stress and emphasize the fact that this is intended
to be a living memorial to their father.
I am, therefore, requesting all my brother UJLACs throughout
the Country that they give serious consideration to the*establish-
ment of the Gus C. Garcia Memorial Fund as a fitting tribute
to a man who raised the hopes and aspirations of Americans of
Mexican descent at a time when it was at its lowest ebb in the
mid-forties. He was the leader among many other great leaders
who "fought the good right" (as the Good Book puts it) to
emancipate his fellow Americans from the shackles of bias, pre-
judice and descrimination, by his brilliant advocacy of their
plight in State and Federal courts as well as the Supreme Court
of the land.
With warm personal regards to you and all my brother LULACs,
I remain
Yours in LULAC,
Oscar M. Laurel
Past National President
of LULAC
