LATIN AMERICAN SEGREGATION SUIT
Mr. Ellis5 This recording is made at Harlem #1 Farm on the afternoon
of July 5. Now what is your name, son?
Rios: Abraham Rios.
Mr. Ellis: What's your number?
Rios: 129699
Mr. Ellis: Uh, where are you from?
Rios: From Eagle Lake, T^xas.
Mr. Ellis: What county?
Rios: Colorado County.
Mr. Ellis: What court were you sentenced from?
Rios: County seat of Matagorda County.
Mr. Ellis: And for what offense?
Rios: Rape
Mr. Ellis: H0w much time?
Rios: I'm doing ten years.
Mr. Ellis: Warden H|nes told me that you wanted to see me. What did
you want to see me about?
Rios: Well, in the first place I wanted - I read the paper and
I saw that where it says that we were suing you for $10,000
and I wanted to get it straight and find out what it was
all about because we don't know anything about filing a
suit. We didn't give «— we got a lawyer by the name of
John T. Herrra who came over here and talked to us and said
he was gonna try to reduce our sentence, but he never did
mention nothing about suing you, Mr. Ellis. We don't
know nothing about that. No one has talked to us about
that either. Oyr folks either. We don't know nothing
about it. Vie just thought we'd let you know that we don't
want to get in the wrong with you. We don't want to put
no suit against you. We don't know what it's all about.
Mr. .Ellis: Well, you understand that you don't have to tell me any
thing if you don't want to. Ycu understand that, don't
you?
Rios: Yes, sir, I understand that.
Mr. Ellis: Uh — Attorney Herrera represented you when you were tried?
Rios: No, sir. He—■
Mr. Ellis: Uh — why did he come out to see you?
Rios: Because when we were tried we had a law—two lawyers from
Houston by the name of and Meyer and then after
they sentenced us to ten years he tried to take over—
tried making an appeal, but he couldn't get it. So we
came with ten years. We got here and about a year
later he came over here to talk to us.
