I also must express appreciation to the office employees,
too numerous to name individually, who were extremely cooperative
and who manifested great patience in answering our questions
and assisting us in every way. A special word of appreciation
also is due Leslie Chappell, Building Supervisor, and his staff.
The final recheck and verification phase of the inventory
of this seventh largest populated county in Texas was conducted
over a period of many months by Maurice Fortin, staff member of
the Texas County Records Inventory Project, and we are grateful
for his work,
It was especially appropriate that Nueces County records
should be inventoried. A new courthouse was under construction,
to be occupied in 1977, and it was imperative that the records
be inventoried before the move. Equally important, the inventory
would be made available to researchers at a time when county
records are being recognized more and more as an invaluable
source.
It was also appropriate that college students should inventory
the records. They were unanimous in acclaiming the value of the
experience. Inventory work gave them an acquaintance with county
government and records and made history "come alive" as they
viewed the primary sources.
Finally, we must express appreciation to the staff of the
County Records Inventory Project for their help in training and
furnishing guidance, as well as in preparing the material for
publication.
