Mauck said he had received

extra-curricular duties as well
as in-classroom performance.
"There are all kinds of
checks and balances when
it comes to these activities,"
Graves said, adding princi-
pals keep abreast of how staff
are doing with extracurricu-
lar activities. 'Those people
(with concerns) can call me
. . and generally, I do get
calls."
At one point Graves
brought perhaps some unin-
tentional humor to the discus-
sion in referring to what some
teachers considered the "less
popular" of assignments, add-
ing the district sometimes
has to assign the positions to
teachers.
He said, "All you got to do
is look at them (askew) and
they'll say, 'Hey, take me off
of it.'" Graves maintained a
serious face, but several audi-
ence members laughed.
Eventually, the board voted

is the largest bite — at approxi-
mately $13,881,000.
Alyea told the board the dis-
trict won't have to dig into
its fund balance to square the
deficit, nevertheless he added,
'This is the toughest budget I
ever put together."
The recommended tax levy
is $6.5 million. The 2006-07
levy was $7.17 million with
$1.19 million in taxes "past
due."
Under the budget, starting
teachers (bachelor's degree,
"zero years "experience) would
receive $35,595, up from
$35,170 last year.

special agent Wayne Smith,
DPS trooper Tommy Oats,
retired DPS narcotics investi-

Districts can spend hun-
dreds of thousands of dol-
lars annually — some larg-
er districts can spend mil-
lions — for costs related to
turnover: recruiting, hiring,
bonuses, processing, training
and leaving.
Another item often cited
in research on why teachers
leave the profession is the
size of raises after 10, 20 or
30 years.
A teacher with 35 years
experience (bachelor's
degree only) makes $57,300
at Bastrop — an increase
of $18,300 since entering
the profession. A masters
degree adds $750; a doctor-
ate, $1,000.
With 15 years of expe-
rience, a Bastrop teacher
(bachelor's only) makes
$46,540, an overall increase
of $7,540 or an average of
$500 per year.
Emanuel said the district

ary is not the main concern
cited for leaving, though he
concedes it can be part of the
equation.
"In the past five years, no,
salary concerns were not the
main reason (cited for leav-
ing), but before that period,
yes, absolutely they were
cited," he said. "I hear all
the other reasons, but money
is not the top reason."
As for the sometimes-
heard appraisal of teachers'
working schedules - that
they get numerous days off
during the school year to go
with 2-3 months of summer
vacation, Emanuel respond-
ed, "I would encourage any-
body to enter the profession
and see the work teachers do
— for any person who thinks
the job ends at 3 p.m.
"Our teachers work many
more days than what they are
paid for — getting training
and additional certification.
They are doing a yeoman's
job, working far more than
eight hours per day. Many
report at 7 a.m. and don't
leave till 7 p.m."
