Smithville musician lands Army gigs in Germany
By Jacqueline Davis
Staff Writer
Smithville "s Jeff Haney has accomplished a
lot in his 27 years.
As a young musician playing rock and
blues, Haney packed local joints like Bastrop's
Oyster Bar and Cedar Creek's Cindy's Gone
Hog Wild with people itching to hear his
Stevie Ray Vaughn-inspired guitar playing.
As his popularity grew, he got to open for
the likes of Willie Nelson, Dennis Quaid and
David Allan Coe.
In late 2004, he independently released his
first CD titled "Ain't Nothin" Changed."
But Haney's life changed in 2005. While his
Scout's Father and
Son Cake Bake set
for January 26
burgeoning music career was enough to support
him full time, he realized he needed a more con-
sistent job to fall back on to support his daughter
Katlyn, now 12, after Katlyn's mother was diag-
nosed with cancer. So he played his last gig and
took up a new career in the U.S. Army.
Haney went through basic training in Fort
Knox, KY, from January to August 2006, where
he traded in his guitar for a wrench and became
a recovery vehicle operator. As an Army spe-
cialist overseas, he repaired Bradley fighting
vehicles, and is currently stationed in Heidelbeig,
Germany
It appeared as though music would be the last
tiling on his mind for a long time, until word got
out among his friends that he happened to be a
skilled vocalist and guitarist.
Haney was headed to
Baumholder, Germany, and
waiting for reassignment a
waiting period he called being
"homeless in the Army" when
he saw a buddy of his in a
conference room. Some scouts
were there looking for recruits
for the Soldier's Chorus, a
vocal complement of Army

sing a few bars of differ-
ent songs and then ""the

asked me if I wanted
to join the Soldier's
Chorus."
So Haney was given
a special assignment
on the chorus, where
he sings as one of 25
vocalists made up
Army cooks, mechan-
ics and other military
personnel. He later
asked to play guitar for
the band.
This gave Haney the
chance over the past
few months to sing and
play guitar before an
international audience.
Haney performed three
to five nights a week

personnel who sing with the
U.S. Army Field Band to boost
morale for the troops and enter-
tain the European public.
"It's a heck of a gig to get
into, and I didn't seek it,"
Haney said. 'These guys said,
T heard you can sing,' and I
said. 'Yes sir.' He asked me to
during the fall and holiday concert series and will
play four to five nights a week in the summer,
which could add up to 200 chorus shows a year.
Haney performs songs from the '60s, '70s, '80s
and disco eras, and even does a Queen package
that he said the Germans go nuts over.
"More than anything they love the '80s,"
Haney said with a perplexed laugh. "That's
really big in Germany right now."
Haney. who is Austin-bom and Smitliville-
raised, is only back m the area for a short time
and will give one more performance tonight
at Cindy's Gone Hog Wild, which he said is
his favorite place to perform. The free show
starts at 9 p.m. and will be a rare chance to hear
Haney live since he leaves to return to Germany
Monday and is not scheduled to return to the
States until July 2009.
However, Haney said he would be coming
back to Central Texas w ith a new full-length CD
produced overseas with his fellow band mates.
Haney said that if he decides not to reenlist, he
would continue to establish his musical career
back in the U.S.
