Bastrop's entrances getting new features
!

Part of Bastrop beautification efforts include installation of this redstone wall at the
intersection of Texas 95 and Chestnut Street.
The saying is ""beauty is only
skin deep."
But how about a change to
something akin to "snazzy book-
ends may point to an exciting inte-
rior," when it comes to towns?
Such is the intention for the
expanded and landscaped entrance
to downtown Bastrop at the inter-
section of Texas 95 and Chestnut
Street. It is the second part of
a $300,000 construction project
to add some sparkle to the main
entry points into Bastrop. The first
area, at Texas 71 and Chestnut was
recently completed
The Texas 95 end of the project,
including a set of nicely sculp-
tured ironstone walls abutting the
curved turning lanes onto and off
of Chestnut Street, is expected to
be completed by the end of next
week, said Joe Newman, presi-
dent/CEO of Bastrop's Economic
Development Corporation
(BEDC).
"The EDC wanted to improve
the entryways to Bastrop and voted
to dedicate the funds for those
improvements," Newman said. He
said the entranceway project is part
of an overall plan that has already
seen the sprucing up of the central
part of Bastrop over the past few
years.
"It all started several years
ago with a $640,000 grant
from the Texas Department of
Transportation," Newman said.
'The BEDC matched that grant
with $150,000 to build the park-
ing lot on the corner of Pine and
Water Streets, improve sidewalks
along Chestnut Street . . . and
construct sidewalks along Old
Highway 71 and add period light-
ing and landscaping to the area
there."
(Hie Bastrop City Council rati-
fies all actions by the BEDC.)
Further improvements to
Chestnut Street — from Water
Street to the railroad tracks cross-
ing — will begin this summer. The
improvements, costing about $1.2
million, include new water lines,
additional sidewalks and period
lighting, Newman said.
Sandra Chipley Kellogg,
a Bastrop landscape designer,
and Befco Engineering Co. of
LaGrange teamed up to design the
landscaped entry points to town.
Newman said besides the iron-
stone wall at the entranceway, pine
trees and other vegetation are being
planted this week.
The intersection's turning lane
into Bastrop, from the Chestnut
Square Entertainment side of the
road, was reconfigured to slow
down motorists who were turning
into Bastrop at a high rate of speed
from Texas 95, Newman said.
4Strange opossum' and chicken attacks'
By Terry Hagerty
Assistant Editor
Elgin police continue to
respond to some peculiar
calls from citizens.
On March 19 a caller in
the 200 block of Wilderness
Trail told dispatch an opos-
sum in an empty lot across
the street from her house was
"acting very strange and rai-
ning in circles." An Elgin
officer "picked up the opos-
sum and transported it to the
county," according to police
reports.
A caller from the 200
block of Kennedy called dis-
patch on March 19 to say that
a dog was running loose and
eating his chickens. When
police arrived they found the
complainant had left, so they
talked to his son who said
a neighbor's dog had come
onto their property and killed
the chickens. The responding
officer reported, "I talked to
the owner of the dog and was
informed that all the property
actually belonged to them,
but they would restrain their
dog-
Also on March 19, a caller
from the 300 block of East
Brenham reported that cop-
per wiring had been taken
from a residence that was for
sale. Police are investigating
leads.
On March 17 police
received a call from a per-
son in the 100 block of
Stubblefield Drive who said
her 55-year-old sister has
been missing since March
15. Police put out a missing
person's notice and continue
to investigate the case.
On March 16 dispatch

children out by the old cotton
gin chasing a train." The call-
er said the youths were trying
to climb up on the moving
train. Police responded to the
location but were unable to
locate the youths.
