Biker ministry to host
rally and crawfish boi
By Jacqueline Davis
Staff Writer
King of Hearts Motorcycle
Ministries will host its 2nd
annual motorcycle rally and
crawfish boil April 19 from
9 a.m. until dusk, with a full
day of bike games, children "s
activities and plenty of craw-
fish to go around.
The event will be held on
the grounds of Celebration
Community Church at 107
Longhorn St. with free admis-
sion to the ralh' and crawfish
sold by the pound.
"We've got at least 200
pounds of crawfish" for the
taking, said Lori McDaniel,
one of the event's oiganizers.
The event will kick off with
a biker sendee at 9:30 am. to
which bikers and non-bikers
alike are invited. A Blessing of
the Bikes will follow at 10:30
a.m. with bike games starting
at 1 p.m.
Organizers of the event
said bikers will be challenged
in several games, such as a
slow race (last one to the finish
line without putting your foot
down) and a slalom competi-
tion.
"A slalom
is when you
have three traf-
fic cones with
a tennis ball on
each one, and
you have to turn
around each
one and pick
them up, then
turn around and
put them back
without put-
ting your foot
on the ground,"
said Charlie
McDaniel,
another event
organizer.
Prizes will
be given to the
winners of the
games, Charlie
McDaniel said.
King of Hearts
has also
brought in other food booths
offering hamburgers, hot dogs,
fajitas and funnel cakes as well
as T-shirts and craft booths.
All proceeds from the event
will benefit King of Hearts,
a ministry that gives aid to
"fallen bikers" in the com-
munity or people in the county

that have come on hard times.
The McDaniels have said the
purpose of King of Hearts is
to reach out to bikers in all
walks of life.

Jail
that we also budgeted expen-
ditures to go along with that,"
Smith said. "We were expect-
ing to be paying a full staff of
salaries, and operating expens-

and carpet, not security, Abreo
added.
The Bastrop County Sheriff's
Office still needs to hire and
train six more jailers and is still
taking applications, Abreo said.
Helmcamp, who has taught pri-
vate music lessons for about 10
years, said she's waited to put
together a child orchestra for
several years with a full assem-
blage of stringed instruments,
but finally took the step this year
to make her dream a reality.
"Getting started is always the
hardest part," Helmcamp said.
"You take that step and you won-
der why you didn't do it sooner.
It helps that I have a lot of paren-
tal support."
Helmcamp's orchestra is
made up of students from pub-
lic, private and home schools,
she said, but all have a love
for music in common. There
are 14 young musicians in the
orchestra.
The orchestra's viola player
couldn't make it on Saturday,
aid a few youngsters were tun-
ing their instruments a bit late,
but for the most part the group
was ready aid waiting to hone
their skills for their first perfor-
maice at the Second Saturday
Salebration in Bastrop June 14.
The children listened in antic-
ipation as Helmcanp described
their first gig, a free show on
Main Street, and told them there
would be more to come at local
nursing homes aid special holi-
day performances. Passersby
should be able to spot them
easily enough with a uniform
appearance of white shirts aid
khaki bottoms.
The group is moving
towad practicing every week,
Helmcanp said.
Bill Owens, owner of Owens

Music Store, was ecstatic that the
musical process was taking place
in his shop. Owens accompaiied
the orchestra on piaio a bit on
Saturday to help set a pace for
the group.
"Children's art on the walls,
aid children playing music in the
store—this is just what Katherine
would have wanted," Owens
said of his late wife Katherine,
who died a few months ago after
a battle w ith Alzheimer's.
The orchestra will likely
play beginner's songs, such as
"Ode to Joy" aid "Can-can"
during their first perfonnaice,
Helmcanp said.
