and ended up staying for
several more. There were
tons of people to talk to,
Steve reported, with many
old friends and acquaintanc-
es mixing and mingling.
"I saw people I hadn't
seen in years," Steve said.
"And so did Marcia. I think
Colin would really have
enjoyed it, but he had a date
in Austin with some
friends."
Colin is their son, home
for the summer from his first
year at Cal Tech - which he
loves.
I also had a terrific e-mail
from Dawn who sounds
very upbeat, as you can read
for yourself:
"As many of you
know...Jeff Fest was (July
20). The Broussards and
Judy Ing and everybody
worked really hard to put
together a fabulous day.
Many folks came; it was a
real crowd of folks!
Everybody had a great time;
it was a ton of fun.
"I hugged people and I
chatted and hugged people
and laughed and took pic-
tures and hugged lots of
people. Can you tell where
my priorities were? I tried
to visit with everybody but it
just was not possible.
"Some folks I got just a
few words with, and then
didn't get back to again.
The kids had a really great
time, and even Jeff enjoyed
himself!
"There was a lot of food
and live music. They had a
pinata for Melody's birthday
and a cake. We raised a con-
siderable amount of money,
for which we are ever so
thankful.
"Thank you everybody
who worked to make the day
so successful and everybody
who came out and donated
and had fun and made the
day a blast. You are appre-
ciated in many ways. The
day will not soon be forgot-
ten! We love you!
"I did more than just hug
people. Really!! I took
some pictures too. I wasn't
there very long before it got
too dark, but I did get a few
good ones."
With hugs and love she
signed off, but boy, we can't
wait to see those pictures.
Like a family
reunion
Next I had a nice note
from Judy Ing - a longtime
friend of Jeff and Dawn and
a wonderful person to know.
Judy wrote, "Hope you
had a good trip and welcome
back to old hot Bastrop.
Thanks for the note in the
paper about Jeff Fest. I
wanted to report on what a
fine time we had. The
weather was hot but the yard
was shady. The music was
as hot as the weather and
well appreciated. Everyone
came, ate, drank and had a
great time. Jeff and Dawn
showed up after the heat of
the day had passed and
while the jug band was play-
ing. Everyone got to go give
him a gentle hug and wish
him well. Melody, his 12-
year-old daughter, not only
played a couple of tunes on
the piano for everyone, but
got to stand on the table
while everyone sang happy
birthday to her. She even
had a horseback ride after
whacking on a pinata."
She continued,
"Everyone there was happy
to see each other and was
very generous with their
donations and auction bids.
We raised a good amount of
money for the Gillams. If
friends are the family you
choose for yourself, it was
sort of like being at a family
reunion. It was very satisfy-
ing for all concerned.
Thanks, Judy."
Thank you, Judy. Those
are words so many of us
want to keep in our hearts.
For so many of us, our
friends are our family. I love
mine!
Ian McLagan's new
CD released
We stopped by one of our
favorite places in town,
Karen's Touch Skin Care
Shop at 807 Main, which is
neatly tucked away directly
behind Adjust Chiropractic,
to see our friend Karen
Turner and catch up on the
news while getting a facial.
She is a guru and makes
these wonderful creams and
lotions which she learned
from our dead but not for-
gotten friend Kim McLagan.
Aug. 2 will be the two year
anniversary of Kim's death.
Anyway, Karen's store is
open Wed. through Sat. from
10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and if you
want to check out her full-
service skincare salon and
her many herbal wraps,
facials, dyed eye lashes, etc.,
you must call for an appoint-
ment or to see when she's
free for a consultation.
She's a real pro and since
she's worked in Bastrop all
her life and worked at the
1834 Tavern (or whatever it
was) and knew us all then.
Good thing she has very
tight lips and keeps things to
herself! Anyway, contact her
at 304-5198 if interested.
She handed me Ian
"Mac" McLagan's newest
CD which she sells in her
shop (again, all to see if
she's not with a patient) -
it's Ian McLagan and the
Bump Band and the title of
the CD is Never Say Never
with a picture of Mac on the
front and a picture of Kim at
a young age in South Africa
with the caption, "It's
always for Kim."
Karen told me each song
had a story behind it - many
of which we know from
hearing stories from the
fabled couple if you were
lucky enough to know them
and the entire album was
about Kim.
"I cried at the last song,"
Karen admitted twice. The
song is called "When the
Crying is Over." Check it
out for yourself.
