BHS spellers head to state
BY TERRY HAGERTY
Assistant Editor
Hey, if you can't beat
Westlake in football, how
about throwing them a
few verbal curveballs?
Like "diphyodont," or
"eleemosynary."
A group of four Bas-
trop High School spell-
ers will be sitting on
the University of Texas
at Austin campus today
trying to spell similarly
difficult words at state
competition.
The students are se-
nior Christina Wright,
juniors David Bryant
and Mariya Kolyesnikov
and sophomore Nikki
Fahrenthold.
And they are led by
one dedicated sopho-
more English teacher:
John McMillan, who has
taught at BHS for 22
years
And does he have a
record to beat of bringing
expert BHS spelling stu-
dents to competition.
McMillan- coached
teams have won the dis-
trict spelling/vocabulary
title for 17 straight years.
And one former student,
Deliah Dominguez, won
the individual state
champion title three
years in row - 2003, 2004
and 2005.
His students unani-
mously credit him.

everything so much fun,

Chestnut project to
begin mid-August
BY TERRY HAGERTY
Assistant Editor
The $1.56 million beautification
project on Chestnut Street will kick
off about mid-August, the consulting
engineer for the project told citizens
Tuesday night at Bastrop City Hall.
Gene Kruppa, with BEFCO Engi-
neering, Inc., of La Grange, spoke to
approximately two dozen citizens at
a public hearing at the council cham-
bers. City Manager Mike Talbot also
participated in the session.
The hearing was to allow affect-
ed residents and business owners a
chance to ask questions and voice con-
cerns about the project that is sched-
uled to take about a year, Kruppa
said.
The newest project is part of over-
all efforts - several of which have al-
ready been completed - to improve the
look of Chestnut Street from Texas 95
to Texas 71.
So-called "bookends" consisting of
an attractive low-height granite wall
and plant beds and trees have already
been completed on both ends of the
main thoroughfare through downtown
Bastrop, also known as Loop 150.

BASTROP CITY COUNCIL
Engineer chosen
or newest well
BY JACQUELINE DAVIS

The Bastrop City
Council took another step
April 28 in the process of
building the city's first
water well west of the
Colorado River, helping
to meet critical city water
needs.
The council unani-
mously voted to accept a
bid of $844,808 from Ex-
cel Construction for con-
struction of Phase 1 of the
new water well facilities
SWINE FLU
at Bob Bryant Park. The
city's water consultants,
K. Friese & Associates,
recommended the bid.
However, the bid was
not the lowest one avail-
able. Keystone Construc-
tion, Inc. submitted a low-
er bid at $807,358.
"We are not recom-
mending the low bidder
here because the bid sub-
mitted to us was condi-
tional," said City Manager
Mike Talbot. "Excel did
not have conditions in the

No cases reported

There are no con-
firmed cases of swine flu
(H1N1 virus) in Bastrop
County or the local school
system, according to local
officials.
Mike Fisher, Bastrop
County's emergency man-
agement coordinator, said
the county is staying on
top of any breaking news.
"We are remaining
vigilant in tracking flu
cases," said Fisher. "We
still continue to have no
confirmed cases in Bas-
trop County."
Mike Talbot, city man-
ager for Bastrop, said the
city has taken numerous
precautions.
"We have not had any
complaints or outbreaks,"
Talbot said. "We have
instituted a number of
safety precautions for all
departments."
That includes keeping
work areas disinfected,
particularly those that
the public comes nto con-
