RECESSION
nemployment stats drop
BY CYNDI WRIGHT
Editor
Unemployment n the Greater Aus-
tin area, which includes Bastrop Coun-
ty, dipped nearly one-half point to 5.8
percent in April, according to the Texas
Workforce Commission. That translates
to an additional 4,900 jobs, thanks to
growth in job sectors like government,
leisure/hospitality and professional/
business services.
"It's fortunate that some job losses
were offset by job gains in leisure and
hospitality, as well as education and
health services," said Andres Alcantar,
TWC commissioner.
Although it is the third straight
month for the Austin area to add jobs,
the rate is still high compared to the
April 2008 unemployment rate of 3.5
percent.
The Bastrop County unemploy-
ment rate was listed as 6.8 percent for
the month of March. That's unchanged
from February 2009.
"With some stimulus funding we
were able to hire two new employees
to help the unemployed," said Mon-
tie Mayer, director of the local TWC.
"Things are still the same percentage
wise in Bastrop County, which is lower
than the national average."
Texas' unemployment rate remained
unchanged in April at 6.7 percent still
below the national rate of 8.9 percent.
The Texas unemployment rate stood at
4.6 percent in April 2008.
"While the Texas unemployment
rate remains substantially lower than
COMMUNITY
the national rate, it is of real concern
that Texans who have lost their jobs
through no fault of their own are hav-
ing a difficult time finding employ-
ment," said Texas Workforce Commis-
sion (TWC) Chairman Tom Pauken.
"Continued unemployment claims re-
main much higher than a year ago."
Texas' seasonally adjusted nonagri-
cultural employment fell by 39,500 jobs
in April. Texas has recorded a net loss
of 173,900 jobs in the past 12 months,
compared with job losses of 5.2 million
in the United States during the same
period, according to the TWC.
The largest over-the-month drop
occurred in professional and business
services with a loss of 20,100 jobs in
April, followed by trade, transporta-
tion and utilities with a loss of 15,400
jobs.
Leisure and Hospitality posted the
largest industry gain in April with an
additional 10,600 jobs. Education and
Health Services added 4,500 jobs, rep-
resenting an annual job growth rate of
4.5 percent.
"TWC and the 28 local workforce
development boards continue to work
to help Texans find jobs," said Ronny
Congleton, TWTC commissioner. "Fed-
eral funds are providing more than $200
million additional dollars for workforce
programs."
Manufacturing employment record-
ed a loss of 13,300 jobs over the month.
Mining and logging employment de-
creased by 5,500 jobs and employment
in construction declined by 3,200 jobs
in April.
