FIRE: House needs shoring up before anyone goes inside
Continued from page A1
On Monday, fire officials
still had little comment on
the cause of the fire, which
is under investigation by
the State Fire Marshal's
Office. Janine Mather,
deputy state fire marshal,
said that arson had not
been ruled out but that
she had no evidence that
pointed in that direction.
A full examination of the
inside of the house was
not possible since what
is left of the second floor
could collapse into the
first at any time, she said.
The second floor would
need to be braced before
she could safely conduct a
more thorough nvestiga-
tion.
"Nothing at this time
appears to be suspicious,"
Mather said. "But that
could change at any time
with new information.
No one saw anyone run-
ning from the scene or
anything, and there have
been no problems at the
construction site that
they're aware of."
Church Street neighbor
Jimmy Sheats said that
he was not home when the
house caught fire but that
he had heard that a porta-
ble heater could have been
left on at the home while
varnish or lacquer of some
sort was drying, possibly
starting the fire. Mather
would only say the cause
of the fire was under in-
vestigation and that more
information may be avail-
able later this week.
The homeowner, Bev-
erly Diane Bennett of
Friendswood, had moved
the historic first floor of
the home earlier this year
from Austin and was hav-
ing a second floor added,
painstakingly ensuring it
had the same historic feel
as the first, Mather said.
The first floor of the home
had been built 100 years
ago, Mather said. The ad-
dition was still being built
when the fire consumed
the whole structure. A
charred clawfoot bathtub
in the home's second floor
and a half-melted portable
toilet on the grounds were
visible from the street
over the weekend.
The addition of the
new home to the Church
Street area was a source
of some controversy over
the past year, as some n
the community deemed it
an unwelcome addition to
the neighborhood. Several
visitors and callers to the
Advertiser who wished to
remain anonymous ex-
pressed their displeasure
last year with the idea of
the home being brought
to Church Street.
