My stomach dropped to the
floor Thursday night when Colt
McCoy was injured.

Two things went through my
mind: 1) If I were freshman quar-
terback Garrett Gilbert, I'd be on
the sideline with my head in a
trash can throwing up.
2) It's not fit to print.
Knowing what I knew about
Gilbert, however, I wasn't too
worried. He's definitely got the
tools to do good things at Texas.
Unfortunately, he's only had the
chance to show it against teams
like Lousiana-Monroe, UTEP and
Central Florida before Thursday's
baptism by fire.
While Texas may have lost,
Gilbert gave all of us Longhorn
faithful a sign of things to come.
Bottom line: Gilbert hasn't
played in his last national cham-
pionship game.
After the game, @aaspreps
tweeted, "UT fans can take some
solace in the fact that the last

on social networking bandwagon

Smithville residents
may pack Tiger Gym when
the Lady Tigers basketball
team is in action, but have
they joined their fan group
on Facebook?
It's no secret that social
networking sites have seen
a boom of users.
Facebook claims there
are more than 350 million
active users.
By the end of 2009,
Twitter had 2.9 million
users and that number is
expected to increase to
over 10 million by the end
of 2010, according to
Twitter.
While the age range of
Facebook users varies
from 15-60, only 11 per-
cent of Twitter's users are
between the ages of 13-20.
The majority of Twitter
users fall into the age cate-
gory of 25-35.
High school sports
teams - even in Bastrop
County - have taken notice
of the trend of social net-
working.
"It's a great communi-
cation tool," said Bastrop
athletic director Gerald
Perry. "We have the
Twitter page and our Web
site, but we use those for
communication. Any
avenue of communication
only helps your program."
Bastrop has a strong
presence on Facebook,
YouTube, Twitter and even
MySpace.
The football team's
Twitter account
@BastropFootball — has
Their Facebook fan
page has 32 fans. It must
be noted that there are
several fan pages for
Bastrop football on
Facebook created by fans.
Even Perry has a fan
page that was created for
him by his son Tristan.
Perry's fan page has 32 fol-
lowers.
"The trend in recruit-
ing is going to be going to
this," Perry said. "The
majority of time when we
get a call from a coach
wanting to see one of our
kids, we can direct them to
our Web site or YouTube
and they have instant
access and don't have to
wait on highlight tapes."
