Precinct 2 Constable Gus Meduna shares a few of his homegrown grape-
fruit with June Parker last week. Meduna grew the citrus n his garden
in Rosanky and was sharing the fruit with folks in downtown Smithvilie
before a hard freeze hit the area.

Although citrus is not
considered a local com-
modity, there is a small
orchard in Rosanky that's
been producing a bumper
crop of what's thought to
be Ruby Red grapefruit
this year.
Even if it's not an or-
chard like the vast acre-
ages in the Rio Grande
Valley, Gus Meduna's 10
trees are pretty mpres-
sive. The precinct 2 con-
stable was sharing his
fruit along Main Street
in Smithville just before
things got really cold last
week.
"I didn't know if the
fruit would freeze or not,"
Meduna said, as he car-
ried buckets of the soft-
ball-sized yellow fruit
around town, handing
them out to merchants
and passersby alike.
One sixteen-foot tall
grapefruit tree produced
dozens of fruit this year,
complete with the telltale
orange blush over bright
yellow skin.

seed," Meduna said. "I
just threw the seeds in
the garden and around
the fence."
Meduna says the trees
began to bear fruit af-
ter about seven years.
He's hoping his variety
is cold hardy and makes
it through the extremely
cold temperatures the
area has experienced this
past week.
"I liked it, it was
sweet," Amanda Sena said
about her free samples.

gerine tree in his small
