Elgin on pace to snap 1! -year drought
ELGIN There is an connection
between Elgin's volleyball and girls
basketball teams.
And that's ignoring the fact that
not one player on the basketball team
played volleyball in the fall.
The connection is that the last
time the Lady Cats basketball team
made the playoffs, the volleyball team
won an outright district championship
n the same school year.
Elgin's volleyball team accom-
plished just that this fall, breaking an
18-year drought.
Girls basketball coach Jackie
Bowman is hoping history repeats
itself and his team can also break the
18-year drought.
Thanks to a 51-39 win over
Lehman Tuesday night, Elgin (13-14,
4-3 District 17-4A) was in third place
and a full game ahead of Manor and
San Marcos.
The top four teams out of the
seven-team District 17-4A will make
the playoffs.
The Lady Cats traveled to Manor
Friday and will host San Marcos
Tuesday.
Both games are scheduled for 7
p.m. and have major playoff implica-
tions for the Lady Cats.
Reamsch cont nues to stay on fire
Bastrop's Hiilari Raemsch continued
her hot streak Tuesday night in a 72-47
loss to Pflugerville.
Raemsch scored a team-high 22
points, scoring 12 from three-point land.
Raemsch may not want January to
end.
The junior guard has averaged 20.4
points per game and has made a total of
20 three-point field goals this month.
Over the last 10, Raemsch has

Bastrop's A.J. Yates (13) dribbles the ball down field Friday in the Bears second game of the Bastrop Bear Showcase
Tournament at BISD Memorial Stadium. Bastrop defeated Bryan Rudder 3-0,
Bears score 3 goals in final 10 minutes
BY MICHAEL ADAMS

CEDAR CREEK — It took
nearly 70 minutes for Bastrop
to get on the scoreboard Friday.
In the final 10 minutes, how-
ever, the Bears hammered down
and scored three goals to take a
3-0 win over Bryan Rudder at
BISD Memorial Stadium.
"(Bryan Rudder) was play-
ing for a draw and played
defense pretty much the entire
game," said head coach Robert
Watson. "After we finally scored,
they had to go in attacking
mode and it opened up their
defense."
Hart McMillan got Bastrop
(4-1-1) on the scoreboard first in
the 68th minute on a cross-field
pass from A.J. Yates.
The Bears added two more
goals in the final three minutes
of the half.
Lee McMillan picked up an
assist on Bastrop's second goal
and Clayton Raemsch finished
up the scoring on an unassited
goal with 1:16 left to play.
Despite seven shots on goal
from the Bears in the first half,
Bryan Rudder was able to keep
the ball out of the net.
Bastrop won five corner
kicks and had a total of 11 shots
on goal.
On Thursday, Bastrop
defeated McCallum 3-2.
The Bears are 2-0 in the
Bastrop Bear Showcase and will
finish the tournament today
against Kingwood Park. Kickoff
is scheduled for 10 a.m.

COMMENTARY
Adams: Mercy rule in hoops would
not fix anything and ruin the game
It seems like every year,
at this particular time,
a debate sparks on the
need for a mercy rule in
basketball.
This year is no different
and it's another blowout
victory by the Austin LBJ
girls over Lanier that is the
cause for debate.
LBJ defeated Lanier
110-20 Tuesday night in a
game in which LBJ scored
47 points in the second half,
despite leading 63-10 at
halftime.
Last year, Lanier was
the victim of two blowouts
MICHAEL
ADAMS
handed down by LBJ. Those
scores were 107-11 and 113-
5.
I think this kind of
action shows a big lack of
class by head coach Renee
Brown.
There is no excuse for
any team to score 47 points
in the second half of basket-
ball after leading by 53 at
halftime. The Lady Jags
scored 27 points in the
fourth quarter.
There is no excuse.
None.
I have some colleagues
that believe a mercy rule is
the answer for keeping
teams from running up the
score.
I don't think a mercy
rule is even close to being
the solution.
A mercy rule n basket-
ball would ruin the game.
It is not going to fix any-
thing and teaches quitting.
