Explanatory Notes
In the inventory proper, each record series is described in a
separate entry. The records are shovn under theo
o-ffice or agency of
origin or final destination and are grouped by subject matter; entries
are numbered consecutively throughout the inventory in one series
(1-267).
*Entries are of two kinds: the master entry, describing the record
indicated by the title; and the artificial entry, which cannot be located
in the county by title, beiln included with other recordings.
Lntry titles shown in all capital letters are those appearing on
volumes or file boxes, or, if enclosed in parentheses, the titles assigned
to containers not titled. P:arenthetical titles added to actual
titles, and shovln vith initial capitals only, Ihave been supplied to
clarify titles or to correct misnomers. The current or most recent
title is used as the t itle of the entry, with inclusive dates of the
series; earlier variations of title are shown with limiting dates.
First and last dates covered by a particular record are shown in
the title-line of the entry. -Contimnous records are showni by a hyphen
between the beginning and closing dats, aS 1860-95, or by two dashes
after a date, indicating the record is current, as 1.915--; lapses in
the record are indicated by a c a coma between the inclusive dates, as
1901-6, 1912-14.
Nufibers or letters in -arentheses after the number of volumes or
file boxes indicate labeling.
Title-line cross-references are used to comp-alete a series kept
separately for a period of ye:rs, or to trace location of an artificial
entry.
To correlat-e closely related records, such as ori inal reports,
shoe n under the office of destination, and copies of the reports, shown
unCder office of origin, them thir1d-parara(gra-cpoh cross-reference is used.
The third-paragra ph cross-refrence is also used, in some instances, to
show prior and subsequent records, wrolere the aurrnose of the records is
apparently the same, but the form. is different.
c'See alLso" cross-references pli ceod after subject headings refer to
records classified under a different grouping; w-ithin the same office or
under another office, but dealing
with thie smne subject matter.
If no statement is made concerning -the condition of records, it is
assumed that they are in good condi tion.
Volume and
file bo:c dimensions arc given in inches. Dimensions
for volumes are given in the sequence e of height, width, thickness; dimensions
for file boxes, in the sequence of height, width, depth.
