Letters to the Editor
Motorists stop to
aid elderly woman
Editor:
On Friday, Feb. 26, our
mother was making her
way to the mailbox, which
sits facing FM 20. On her
way back to her vehicle,
she fell in the driveway
to our homes and was try-
ng to figure out a way to
get herself up. She had
left her cell phone in her
car and was not able to
call us for help. She said
before she knew it there
were several vehicles and
people who had stopped to
help her, even a man driv-
ng a bread truck.
She was bruised but
not broken and this act
of kindness confirmed her
belief that there are still
good and caring people in
our world.
On behalf of our fam-
ily, we would like to thank
each and every one of you
who took the time to stop
and offer assistance to our
mother. It is nice to know
there are still people in
the world to offer help to
those in need.
If ever there comes a
time where you or a family
member is in need of some
type of help, I hope there
will be people like you to
return the gesture.

Give vote to
Clark for BISD
Editor:
The Bastrop Inde-
pendent School District
board elections in May
are very important.
All taxpayers should
be interested in voting
for the Bastrop school
board. It is important
that graduates from
Bastrop High School and
the new Cedar Creek
High School be prepared
for either college or the
workplace.
It is important that
BISD have school board
members who under-
stand the importance of
academic curriculum.
Funds for education have
been and continue to be a
problem in Texas. School
board members need to
understand academics
take precedence in the
educational system and
will have to make diffi-
cult decisions.
We must have board
members who know
about education curricu-
lum and the importance
of teaching students
learning styles.
Jim Clark has the
background and experi-
ence to be an excellent
board member. He has
a well-rounded back-
ground in public edu-
cation. He has taught
at the high school level
and as a counselor he is
aware of the needs of all
students.
I ask that you vote for
Jim Clark for Bastrop
school board.

Disease research using animal models
Editor:
In an oblique way, I
thank The Humane Society
for its paid broadside that
appeared in the March 11,
2010 issue of The Bastrop
Advertiser.
I, too, celebrate life
shared with the wondrous
diversity of animals and
plants. I share in that deli-
cate and sacred balance
where life is sustained only
by the sacrifice of other life;
a fact I ponder in gratitude
with each breath and meal
I enjoy, knowing my exha-
lations and ultimate re-
mains will be recycled into
new life.
There exists a primal,
sacred pact by which we all
live, even though modernt
ty hides the sacrifices con-
tained in that juicy ham-
burger we love so much.
The Humane Society's
broadside also renewed my
gratitude for all the ani-
mals that have contributed
to the biomedical advances
responsible for extending
my own life by decades.
As a biomedical sci-
entist, I know the critical
importance of research us-
ing animal models and am
well aware of the concern
of scientists to undertake
such research in an ethical
manner. Although simpler
experimental models are
important and useful, there
is no substitute for testing
within the complexity of
the intact animal when
techniques, devices and
pharmaceutical agents are
being developed for medical
use.
I applaud the research
being performed at both di-
visions of The University of
Texas M.D. Anderson Can-
cer Center here in Bastrop
County and institutions
elsewhere in the state. It is
research using non-human
primate, rodent, fish and
other animal models that
contributes to our under-
standing of disease causa-
tion and points to new ap-
proaches for the prevention
and therapy of human and
animal diseases. Scientists
employing these animal
models deserve our thanks
and support.
Sincerely,
Earl F. Walborg, Jr., Ph.D.

Haberers
thankful
ibr strong
support
Editor:
We would like to express
our sincere gratitude for
the generous support we re-
ceived after the recent tragic
loss of our home due to fire.
We would like to thank
everyone who donated their
time, effort and money to
help make the dinner and
auction on Feb. 28 a huge
success. The money raised
will go a long way towards
helping us replace our
home.
No words can express
how blessed and thankful
we feel for your kindness
and generosity.

ommunity comes together to help couple
BY LEAANN GOEPTZ LEE
Special to the Advertiser
If one ever had doubts
about how special a place
Rockne is, all they would
have to do is come out to
a fundraising event to
witness how the commu-
nity bands together to
help those in need. Sev-
eral people gathered at
Watterson Hall on Sun-
day to help raise money
for Hayden and Marie
Haberer, whose home
was destroyed by a fire
in January.
The event began with
a barbecue lunch and
then a live auction at 2
p.m. Auctioneers worked
tirelessly and people
were happy to donate
their time and items for
the auction. The event
was organized by Nell
Rose Fohn and Melissa
Voigt.
I was also impressed
by the fact that Marie
herself made it a point
to circulate throughout
the crowd, introducing
herself and graciously
thanking each person for
coming. When I sat down
to talk to Marie and her
husband, Hayden, they
spoke not of the devas-
tation of loss from the fire,
but about how blessed they
were to be surrounded by
such generous and caring
folks. They were also hap-
py to talk about the fact
that they will celebrate
their forty-fifth wedding
anniversary this April.
"We met right over
there," Hayden said, as
he pointed to the nearby
dance floor with a twinkle
in his eye. Marie added
that they held their wed-
ding dance at Watterson
Hall (then known as Big
Annie's) as well. The cou-
ple settled down in San
Marcos, where they lived
up until nine years ago,
when they returned to Ma-
rie's hometown to retire
and live in her childhood
home on Hwy. 535 near
Watterson.
The 63-year-old house
which was recently de-
stroyed in the fire was built
when she was a little girl
(the windows were even
made lower to the ground
so that she could look out
at the time).
As the auction came to a
close, Marie addressed the
crowd and was filled with
emotion as she expressed
her heartfelt gratitude for
everyone's generosity.

gether Sunday to raise money for

ary.
