GIRLS SOCCER
Third time around the charm?
9
MICHAEL
ADAMS
The Bastrop Lady
Bears know what they
are getting come Tuesday
evening.
No strangers to the
No. 1 San Antonio Reagan
Rattlers, Bastrop knows
its work is cut out for
them.
Bastrop and Reagan
will open the 2010 Uni-
versity Interscholastic
League girls soccer play-
offs Tuesday at BISD Me-
morial Stadium in the bi-
district round. Kickoff is
scheduled for 6 p.m.
The Lady Bears (14-
6-3) are entering their
fourth playoff appearance
and have not won a play-
off game in the 2000s.
As a matter of fact,
Bastrop has only had
three playoff games in this
decade and has been held
scoreless in two of them.
Last year, the Lady
Bears played their best
game of the season against
the Lady Rattlers, falling
2-0 in San Antonio.
Having played Reagan
(17-2-2) in the the last two
playoff games, the third
time might be the charm
n a month where Cinder-
ella is known to arrive at
the ball.
It won't be easy.
The Lady Rattlers
have been a regional fi-
nalist in seven of the last
eight years, going to the
state tournament three
times.
Reagan is six years
removed from its heart-
breaking 1-0 shootout loss
to Carrolton Creekview in
the state finals.
Last year, the Lady
Rattlers lost to state
champion Coppell 1-0 in

1 San Antonio Reagan. This will be the third consecutive year Bastrop has
overtime in the state semi-
finals.
Bastrop is led into the
playoffs with their leading
scorer Kattie Patterson's 24
goals.
Patterson could be the
key as the Lady Bears are
11-1 when the senior strik-
er scores.
Bastrop's defense is
another key to its success,
led by senior captain Kern
Kelley and junior Stacy
Smith.
Reagan lost their second
game of the season to John-
son on March 9.
The Lady Rattlers
hadn't lost since Jan. 9,
when it dropped a 1-0 deci-
sion to 2009 state runner-
up The Woodlands.
Unlike last year when
the two teams were expect-
ed to enter into a offensive
shootout, Bastrop and Rea-
gan might engage into a de-
fensive battle.
The Lady Rattlers have
outscoredits opponents 14-1
in their last five games.
Bastrop has just one
win in its last five games
and is 1-1-3, with shootout
losses to Westlake and Aus-
tin High.
Bastrop is outscoring its
opponents 9-6 in its last five
games.

More losses for the Bears
The Bastrop Bears dropped
back-to-back games this week,
falling to Westlake 4-0 Wednes-
day and Connally 9-3 Thursday.
Thursday against Connally,
Bastrop had a little better luck
all around than the Bears did
Wednesday against Westlake.
Bastrop only got one hit against
the Chaparrals — a team that had
two no-hitters against the Bears
in 2009.
The Bears only hit came from
Justin Froncek.
Head coach Mark Williams
said he felt the team was just
snake bit.
"We had runners at first and
second and hit a shot up the
middle and it bounced off the
pitcher's foot and went straight
to the second baseman and they
turned two," Williams said.
On Thursday, Bastrop had
three runs and four hits, but the
Cougars of Connally had a lot of
firepower.
The Bears did get a home
run from Cade Staton, his sec-
ond in the last week.
Bastrop will host Ander-
son Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Bear
Field.

Elgin works out sprin: ever
BY MICHAEL ADAMS
Sports Editor
ELGIN — The No.
3 Elgin Lady Cats
caught a little spring
fever Monday.
Elgin still managed
to pull out a 7-2 win
over Del Valle at Lady
Cat Field, but the win
was very uncharacter-
stic for a team that
has won by the mercy
rule in its last four
games.
"I think so," said
head coach Amanda
Wolf when asked if
she felt her team was
in spring break mode.
"I really didn't have to
say much to them be-
cause they said It with
their face."
With a No. 3 rank-
ng in the Class 4A
Texas Girls Coaches
Association state poll,
Wolf acknowledged
that her team has a
target on their back.
Del Valle sure
wasn't afraid of the
Lady Cats (18-2, 4-0
District 17-4A) and
came right at them.
The Lady Cardi-
nals did hold a small
1-0 lead after 2 1/2 in-
nings.
It didn't last too
long as Elgin's bats
came alive in the bot-
tom of the third in-
ning.

scored Swenson and
Adams and put Alyssa
Wilkins on third.
Morgan Shultz
drove in Wilkins with
a double to put Elgin
up 4-1 going into the
fourth inning.
Del Valle cracked
into the Lady Cats'
lead by one in the top
of the fourth inning,
but Kelsey Markham
scored the Lady Cats'
first run on an single
by Moore.
Kaci Olson was
plated by Swenson's
single to right field to
put Elgin up 6-2.
The Lady Cats
weren't done and
scored their final run,
for good measure, in
the bottom of the sixth
inning thanks to a sac-
rifice by Olson to score
Moore, who reach base
on a triple to center-
field.
Freshman pitcher
Laruen Slatten got
the win on the mound,
pitching five innings
and striking out eight
batters while walking
two.
Slatten gave up two
hits and one earned
run.
Elgin enters a
tough week of games
and will travel to
Hays Tuesday before
hosting second place
Lockhart Friday. Both
games are scheduled
for 7 p.m.
"Everyone is gun-
ning for us now," Wolf
said. "We are going to
be ready for (the up-
coming) week."
