LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Canadian talks trash
WELL, WE HAVE A FEW bruises on our shins
from the beer bottles in the trash bags hitting us in
the wind, and our eyes are still burning a little from
blowing dirt, but hey!! there is less trash along the
highway between Canadian and the Y as a result of
the community "Trash Off" last Saturday morning.
We had a successful
turn-out of at least six-
ty-three devoted indi-
viduals who must truly
care about the aesthet-
ics of our community.
We want to sincere-
ly thank everyone who
helped with our "Don't Mess With Texas Trash-
Off" event.
The Quiet Inn was very generous in providing
their lovely lobby for our meeting place that morn-
ng, and as a drop-off place for supplies all day. The
First National Bank started us off with coffee and
donuts at the Quiet Inn. The Hemphill County
Sheriff's Office provided us with Deputy Ronnie
Moore to patrol the
highway with flashing
lights in order to help
slow the traffic. The Canadian Record was won-
derful for publicizing the event for several weeks.
Laurie Brown and her grandkids also handed out
bottled water to weary, wind-blown workers along
the route.
We want to especially thank several businesses
for sending crews to help. Nick Thomas, Inc. sent a
crew of four: Alex Medina, Eleazar Borrego, Man-
uel Rosales, and Mau-
ro Vargas. Eddie's
Oil Field Service sent
a crew of three: Je-
sus Martinez, Porfirio
Carrisalez, and Edgar
Arredondo. King Well
Service sent a crew of five: Cory Pittman, Manuel
Hernandez, Ezequiel Cervantes, Pascual Jara, and
Leonardo De La Cruz.
The City of Canadian provided Tim Cook and
his city vehicle to transport full trash bags to the
Transfer Station where Zevin Heusel weighed the
loads.
Individuals represented a number of businesses,
churches, and other organizations. Doug and Su-
san Tennant from the First National Bank. Tiffa-
ny Carpenter from Canadian Sign Company.
Susie Anderson from Capital Farm Credit.
Kenny and Sam Barrett from Apex Surveyors.
Sheri Hensley from Moore Financial. Tamera
Julian and Steve Chapman from the Cham-
ber of Commerce and EDC. John Hughes and
Charles Kessie from the Masonic Lodge. Dayla
and Colton Cates, Kade Johnson, Kyle Barnett,
and Jim Hash from 4H. Yesenia Flores, Celina
Lopez, A'Lisa Velasquez, Obed Huerta, Carlos
Lopez, Monica Velasquez, and Daniela Medra-
no from the Sacred Heart Youth Group. Tom
Denney from the Hemphill County Appraisal
District. Beth Sturgeon, Debbie Anderson,
and Loralee Cooley from the First Presbyte-
rian Church. Wayne and Shirley Baker, Brad
Henderson, Dana and Darby Cook, and Catlin
and Hailey Cook from First Christian Church.
Don Rader, Malouf Abraham, and Dorothea Crow-
ell from Rotary Club. Other individuals were Lar-
ry and Judy Beasley, Jocelyn Meek Rati iff, Jeremy
Oatman, Cheta and Matt McLanahan.
A number of businesses had already cleaned up
n front of their property along the highway includ-
ing King Well Service (always clean), Red Man, and
National Oilwell. Warren and Jane Rivers picked up
trash earlier in the week along Highway 33.
We apologize if we missed anyone who helped!
Our community has identified a challenging
trash problem and we are tackling it because we are
tough. Let's continue to do so!
