Since August 5, nearly 5" of rain have
fallen n Canadian, Texas. There is little not
to like about that...unless you are Debbie
Skinner, Project Manager for TxDOT's Main
Streetscape and Highway 60/83 Improve-
ment Projects.
Skinner was taking Wednesday off this
week, instead of doing what she had antici-
pated doing: supervising the completion of
sidewalk construction on the south side of
Main, and the near completion of the Main
Streetscape project altogether. "It's too wet,"
she said, adding that instead, crews were
pumping water from Highway 60 yesterday.
"We were hoping to get done with the side-
walk on Main today," Skinner said yesterday,
"but it's not going to happen."
Skinner said the sidewalk should be fin-
shed next week "for sure," and after a pause,
added, "if we get better weather."
The sidewalks have finally been complet-
ed in the 300 block of Main, (photo above) and
work began earlier this week on the shady
side of the street in front of the City Drug
Soda Fountain. Delays were caused in start-
ng those sidewalks because of the compl i -
cated elevation changes, which necessitated
bri nging in another subcontractor.
It seemed like the ball was rolling again
last week...until the rain came. And when it
came, it poured.
"We'll try again tomorrow," said Skinner
of the Main Street construction work. "After
we finish the sidewalks, it will take the elec-
tricians a couple of weeks to set poles up and
get everything wired in."
Hardest hit by the rainfall was the sec-
tion of Highway 60/83 in front of Canadian
Courts, (photo at right) where removal of the
old surface and in preparation for new hot mix
and concrete paving left a hole that collected
rainfall and formed a small lake, before i t was
pumped out Wednesday morning.
Now, the crews are just waiting for it to
dry.
Meanwhile work continues to the north,
where power lines are being run under the
roadway, and in front of Taylor's, where re-
moval of the old concrete has begun.
"They were supposed to be laying the
hot mix today," Skinner said of the section of
highway i n front of Animal Health and Nutri-■
tion. "We got delayed there. As soon as that's
down, we'll start the concrete paving on that
street."
But for now, the concrete paving will wait.
"It will be next week before we're paving
again," Skinner said. "In the mean time, we
are cleaning and sealing bridge joints [on the
Canadian River Bridge north of town]. We
are scheduled soon to paint the bridge."
Skinner also said that there is a plan to
correct the problem of water pooling in the
section of Highway 60/83 near Dairy Queen
and Allsups. "We're going to wait for con-
crete paving to be finished," she said, "and
then we'll bring in a machine to grind it down
so it will drain better."
"We hope to get water moving out of there
a little faster," Skinner said, adding that once
the roadway is opened up to its full width, the
traffic Will move more easily through that
confined area, which should help resolve the
problem, too. "We'll do something to fix it,"
she vowed.
The bottom line, which is only a bottom
line f the weather cooperates: "We should be
done with the concrete paving by end of Sep-
tember if not sooner," Skinner said.
