Canadian River Beach Club hosts Saturday's
first annual Calf Fry Cookoff and Dance
The Canadian River Beach Club will host Canadian's
F irst Annual Calf Fry Cookoff Saturday, as over thirty teams
from all over the state fire up their deep fryers to engage n
heated battle at Jones Pavilion in the Hemphill County Re-
creation Complex. The public is invited to join the day's fun,
which will include food, games, contests and an evening dance
to "Trop-Rock" music performed by Galveston's Jerry Diaz
and Hanna's Reef.
This is the first of what Beach Clubbers expect to be an
annual event. It was divinely inspired by plans to celebrate
three of the Club members consecutive birthdays. John Jul-
ian, L.H. Webb and Doug Benge each turned 50 this week.
The lifelong friends' zero-birthdays fall on November 9, 10
and 11, and when they began planning their party, things just
got out ofhand.
"It has now evolved into this massive calf fry cookoff thing,"
said fellow Beach Clubber Kimbra Julian, who has helped or-
ganize the event and serves as "the brains of the bunch," ac-
cording to one member. Other Beach Club members are Scott
Francis, Britt Sturgeon and Mike Tucker.
While the master chefs are preparing their fine cuisine
and answering the timeless question, "How many ways are
there to cook a calf testicle?", a variety of games and competi-
tions will be enjoyed by cooks and diners alike. Included in the
entertainment will be a Texas Hold'em Tournament hosted
by the Miami Volunteer Fire Department, Hoola Hoop and
I mbo contests, Chicken Bingo, a Big Flipper Race (featur-
ng athletes in scuba gear), Beer Pong, Chicken Roping, Toilet
Paper and Plunger Racing and of course, a Calf Fry Eating
Contest.
In addition to the featured delicacy, other foods included
on Saturday's menu are fry bread, hamburgers, sausage on
a stick, stuffed jalapenos and brisket. The Canadian YMCA
will have a drink concession and sell cotton candy, and some
local non-profit organization is missing a sure bet if they fa:
to offer an antacid stand.
Doug Moreland will also be on hand to do his chainsaw
carving.
The Calf Fry competition will be held from 4-7 p.m. Prizes
will be awarded at the culmination of the event. The first-
place prize in the Calf-Fry Cookoff is $500 cash, which will be
accompanied by presentation of the "Brass Balls" Traveling
Trophy. (14 pounds. We asked.)
Other honors will include first- and second-place Judges'
Choice awards, a first-place People's Choice award, and the
Worst Nuts prize.
Among the event's celebrity Judging team are the Lee
brothers, owners of Amarillo's Big Texan Steakhouse. Lend-
ing their testes-tast ing skills wil 1 be "some of the best-looking
local ladies," (Cheryl Hohertz, Carla Evans and Julie Cooper)
and "three old ranchers," (Sid Ewing, Bob Durham and John
Whitsitt).
Vying for those honors will be teams from San Marcos,
Dallas, Lubbock, Dalhart, Dumas, Paducah, Canadian and
other neighbor communities. Their names range from the
amusing to the unmentionable—among them, Team Go-Nad,
Nuts "r" Us, the Blue Oyster Boys and Nuttin' but a Good
Time.
The dance begins at 8 Saturday evening and winds down
at midnight. Jerry Diaz and Hanna's Reef (www.jerryd.iaz.
com) will take the stage to perform what they call "Trop-
Rock," or Texas Beach Music. They claim among their musi-
cal influences the Beach Boys, Jerry Jeff Walker and Jimmy
Buffet. A veteran rhythm section provides a rock-n-roll beat
accompanied by the tropical sound of steel drums and con-
gas. Diaz rounds out each song with his own personal brand
of storytelling.
Admission to the afternoon and evening event is $5 per
person for either the Cookoff or Dance, or $10 for both. A por-
tion of the proceeds will be donated to a local non-profit.
Prepare for a lip-smacking good time.
