all students at Ram Jam
Whitney Fowler
CAMPUS LIFE EDITOR
"Ram Jam," a day of live music,
free food, games, contests and prizes is
scheduled for April 12, from 11:30 a.m.
to 4 p.m. in the outdoors area between
Dora's dining hall and the library at
Wesleyan, according to the Office of
Student Life.
"Ram Jam is an
annual live music festi-
val that is hosted by
Student Life and Stu-
dent Organizational
Advisory Committee. It
is simply to encourage
students to get in-
volved in activities on
campus and to have fun while in school.
"It is an outlet before finals, and it
also gives our students who are in bands
a chance to perform and possibly gain a
following," Student Activities Coor-
dinator Stacy Nestor said.
N'Qya Hodges, a local R&B/Hip-
Hop female singer and songwriter is
scheduled to open the event with the
singing of the National Anthem at 11:30
a.m.
Music performances will include
Joseph Bobula following the singing of
the National Anthem, the band
"Honchi" performing at 12:45 p.m. and
"Space Monkey" performing at 2 p.m.,
according to Student Life.
Various organizations will sponsor
activities for students including a pie-
eating contest sponsored by Kappa
Alpha, formerly known as the Sons of
Sakkara fraternity, water balloons spon-
sored by Gamma Sigma Sigma,
"Twister" sponsored by Lambda Kappa
Kappa and a moonwalk activity spon-
sored by Residential Life. Other activi-
ties of the day will
include a water slide
and sand volleyball.
Free food will
include snow cones
provided by
Residential Life and
popcorn from Sigma
Kappa Lambda.
The "Eggstravaganza," is another
free event approaching at Wesleyan.
Scheduled for April 15, the event is
open to the Wesleyan community —
especially to children — for a day of
Easter-related festivities according to
Student Life.
Children will have the opportunity
to visit the Easter Bunny, partake in a
coloring contest and an egg hunt.
Residential Life will sponsor cotton
candy and a relay race, and there will be
an egg toss among other games sched-
uled.
"It is an outlet before
finals, and it also gives our
students who are in bands
a chance to perform...."

Plans are still being worked out to reconstruct the second floor
of the Polytechnic United Methodist Church for office spaces
for faculty. Construction is expected to be complete this fall.

we'll have a brand new computer system
that I think will meet the standards of
SACS," he said.
To prepare for this visit, Wesleyan fac-
ulty has produced a self-study and strategic
plan that is required by SACS for accredi-
tation. This study is available in the library.
In section four of the self-study there is
an explanation of how the university fulfills
SACS "must" statements that is required
for accreditation. "I think we are very pre-
pared," said Henderson. "We've got our
documents in place."
After their assessment they will give a
report to the president on the morning of
April 25. They will then write a formal
report that the university will get two to
three weeks after their visit.
"Reaccreditation of the university is
very important to us," said Nancarrow. "As
we look forward in our strategic plan we
are really going to look how at what is to
asses what we do — asses our courses;
assess our programs, asses our teaching —
all aspects of what we do in the institu-
tion."
A copy of SACS' "must" statements
and other information about SACS accredi-
tation can be found at www.sacscoc.org/cri-
teria.asp.
A less detailed outline of SACS and
their accreditation criteria can also be
found on www.sacscoc.org/accrrevproj.asp
under Principles of Accreditation.
Wesleyan must meet the following six
criteria to maintain accreditation by
the Southern Association of Colleges
and Schools:
1) Institutional purpose
2) Institutional effectiveness
3) Educational programs
4) Educational support services
5) Library
6) Administrative processes

The human
resources and finan-
cial applications are
now operational. As
of April 7, the stu-
dent system, which is
said to be very stu-
dent-friendly, should be ready for use very
soon.
By next fall students should be able to
view financial statements, class schedules,
grades and transcripts online.
Within the next year or two, student
should be able to register online as well.
Alexander says that she is sure that
students will be pleased with the results
once the system is completely operational.
Wireless, from page 1
that the laptop can be configured to use the
card, Coordinator of Library Operations
Sheri Parker said.
The card will be inserted into a
Personal Computer Memory Card Inter-
national Association (PCMCIA) port in the
laptop for the PCMCIA Wireless Card,
according to Gary Brunner, Wesleyan's
communications support specialist.
"The procedure for installing the wire-
less card is very simple. Insert the card in
the laptop slot, Windows will find the new
card and ask for some software. You insert
the software CD and install software spe-
cific to Windows. This is not necessary if
you have Windows XP on your laptop.
That's it, and the library staff will help you
do it!" Brunner said.
The card will give students' access to
the Internet and access to the library's cata-
log.
"It gives you more freedom, plus you
can be comfortable and sit where you
want," Swigger said.
The library considers the new service
as a step of progress toward further expan-
sion of services offered to the students,
according to Swigger.
"We don't have money right now to
purchase laptops for checkout — that is a
goal," Swigger said. "I would like to be
able to have some so that people could just
come up and checkout the laptop and the
card."
The library's hope is to extend the
wireless coverage eventually campuswide
instead of wireless Internet access only
available on the first and second floors of
the library Swigger said. There is an uncer-
tain future in the availability of financial
aid from the Telecommunications
Infrastructure Fund that may become
extinct in Texas, which would affect
libraries across the state, Swigger ex-
plained, so as far as further advancement is
concerned, "We really are in a holding pat-
tern on planning, waiting to see what the
state is going to do."
Swigger said that also with "the tight
budget situation [at Wesleyan] — we're
trying to wait and see how we can maxi-
mize ever dollar because the whole idea of
the library is student services."
According to Swigger, the Information,
Communication and Technology depart-
ment (ICT) paid for the initial set up of the
wireless networking and the library pur-
chased the eight airport cards.
"ICT promised to have people at the
help desk during the day," Parker said, to
assist students with any difficulties.
"This gives [students] a little more
flexibility," Swigger said. "And we do hope
to be able to come up with funding at some
point so that we can purchase some laptops.
But it is a start."
