BGG HUNTS.
How thankful we are that tome
body instituted the custom of having
eff hunts at the Baster time. There
is almost as much joy in the hurry
and scurry of seeing who can find
the greatest number of eggs, as there
is in looking into the stocking on
Christmas morning. Great numbers
of the Hereford children, perhaps
all of them, enjoyed an egg hunt
sometime during the Easter season,
but one we happen to know most
about was given at the home of Little
Thelma Tynes on Saturday afternoon
at 3 o'clock. About thirty small
children, most of them members of
the cradle roll and the kindergarten
departments of the Christian Sunday
school, gathered at the Tynes home
for an Easter party and an egg hunt.
Mrs. Tynes and Mrs. Chris Giarri-
son, the teachers of these depart-
ments, were careful that each little
tot should find his share of the
beautifully colored eggs. What fun
it was to run from place to place and
how joyous the shout when an egg
was found. While delicious home
made candy was being served the
children amused themselves by
watching the goldfish and the quaint
movements of the rabbit that many
of us have met at the Woodburn
drug store. All had a delightful
time.
A PLEASANT OCCASION.
As a thoughful courtesy and a very
pleasant surprise Mr. and Mrs. J.
E. Ferguson eutertained with a six
o'clock dinner on last Friday, the
occasion being the seventy-first birth-
day of the mother, Mrs. J. J. Fer-
guson. It was a family gathering
and delightfully informal throughout.
Simple elegance marked every table
appointment, which, with the pala-
table repast and the pleasant com-
pany, made the time one to be re-
membered. The surprise came when
little Grace, the grand-daughter, and
Annie Wildy Lea, came in and sur-
rounded the grandmother with a
ribbon clothes line upon which were
hung many presents, both dainty and
useful. Mrs. Ferguson also received
many post cards bearing the sincere
greeting of friends. The guests
were: Mrs. J. J. Ferguson. Mr. and
Mrs. C. C. Ferguson and Grace,
Mrs. Alice Lea and daughter, Annie
Wildy.
SURPRISE BIRTHDAY.
The lady friends of Mrs. W. M.
Cogdell were unexpected but very
welcome guests in the Cogdell home
on the twelfth of last week, the oc-
casion being a surprise birthday for
Mrs. Cogdell. The good ladies
brought an abundance of good things
to eat, coming early in the forenoon
and making themselves at home for
the day. The ocassion was a
thoroughly enjoyable one to all, and
especially so to Mrs. Cogdell. Miss
Bertha Witherspoon gave several
readings that added much to the
general pleasure. There were some
fifteen or sixteen of Mrs. Cogdell's
friends present.
"42."
One of the very pleasant little
par:ies of the week was that given
by Mr. and Mrs. Luther Hough last
Monday evening. Conversation and
"42" made the time pass most
pleasantly. There were four tables
and quite a number of progressions
were made. Refreshments of cream
with pineapple and angel food cake
were served.

ville has been raised. The road is
being promoted by San Antonio capi-
talists.
The $75,000 bond issue for the
improvement of public roads in Mc-
Cullough county has been carried by
a majority of 6 to 1. A first class
engineer has been secured from the ,
Federal Government to superintend
the construction of the roads. j
Smithville will have an election for j
issuing bonds for building roads to
the amount of $100,000.
Georgetown has voted bonds to the
amount of $45,000 for water works.
The hog packing house at Cuero
is completed with the exception of

bones will be converted into a com-
mercial fertilizer by an approved
formula.

contract for the building of twenty -
two miles of inter-coastal canal from
Matagorda to the mouth of the

At a recent election for the issu-
ance of bonds for the improvement

now under way the construction of a
ship channel and turning basin at
Port Bolivar, which will give thirty
feet of water, a sufficient depth for
the largest ocean going vessel.
Machinery is being placed in the
new packing house at Sweetwater
and work will be commenced on the
second packing house in a few days.
The State Board of Health is well
pleased with the results of "Clean-
up" day and have decided to per-
petuate it by making 1911 a clean-up
year and the bulletin has something
to say about the vicious carel-ssness
of our neighbors. Our State Board
of Health is doing some effective
work for Texas and it merits the co-
operation of all good citizens as
well as a more liberal appropriation
from the 32nd Legislature.
