The state daily newspapers of
Tuesday run headlines that Maine
had "gone vet" and thus repudiated
prohibition- The AmariUo Daily
Nevs of Wednesday and other
papers corrected the report and
shoved Maine back on dry land.
Mark the prediction: If the people
of Texas do not settle the liquor
question in a spirit of equity, some
concessions on each side, making
allowances for customs and convic-
tions, it will not be ten years before
the division of Texas into two or
more states will be a burning ques-
tion. We regret to say that, for it
it a consumnation to be deplored,
but the signs of the times show what
is ahead of us.—Waco Tribune.

In the retirement of Senator
Bailey from the Senate, Texas will
lose the services of one of her most
brilliant and talented sons, but his
withdrawal from the unequal contest
will have a tendency to clear the
murky political atmosphere, yet he
will always be a strong partisan
factor in shaping the political maps
of the state. While we have admir-
ed Mr. Bailey for his strength of
mind, force of character and ability
to lead in the Senate, yet we have
not been unmindful of his childish
and peevish conduct, his personal
and political errors, and its his un-
fa riddled ambition to dictate the
policies of the Democrat party.
Therefore, we firmly believe that
Senator Bailey's decision to retire to
private life will cement the broken
elements of the state democracy and
insure a season of political peace.
