Astronomers measure distances
to far-off stars by their radiance
says the National Geographic So
ciety. The apparent brightness of
light in accordance with a basic
of physics diminishes by the
square of its distance from the
observer. Thus if the sun were
twice as far away from the earth
it would seem only one-fourth as
bright.

Heed The Signs
-Save Glass!
Fort Hood Tank firing ranges
have added a new sign since
the arrival of the new M-103 tanks
which are to be tested here this
spring and summer.
The signs which read "DAN
GER CONCUSSION DAMAGE
POSSIBLE TO GLASS LOWER
CAR WINDOWS"—have now been
placed on adjacent roads to the
ranges which will be used to fire
the heavy tanks.
According to Major Henry V.
signs are for the protection of pass
ing motorists. The concussion of
the 120-mm guns could quite pos
sibly break the glass in automo
bile windows.
The heavy gun tanks will start
firing on the ranges with their 120-
mm guns in the middle of May.
They will use ranges located along
West Range road between South
McCabe Post Range Officer the
Fort Hood and North Fort Hood.
